The biggest problem was the extremely strong smell throughout the cottage. There was a very strong chemical/mothball-like smell, combined with an intense musty and stale odor. Even the bed linen had a noticeable chemical and musty smell, despite appearing clean and white. The cottage also did not feel properly cleaned. The carpets were visibly dirty and stained, and there were several areas of discoloration on the walls and around the floors and corners. Overall, the cottage felt poorly maintained and insufficiently ventilated. We were travelling with two young children and arrived very late, so we decided to stay for the one night we had booked. This was our own decision, and we did not ask for a refund. Although the property is in a great location, our experience was disappointing. The room was very dusty, and there were many mosquitoes because the windows had no insect screens. We understand that sleeping on a futon is part of the traditional Japanese experience, and this was not our first time sleeping on one during our trip. However, this futon seemed to be of poor quality, and it was extremely uncomfortable. As a result, we had the worst night's sleep of our entire trip to Japan. Overall, the property seems to be in need of some renovation and better maintenance. With some improvements, it could be a much more enjoyable place to stay, especially given its excellent location. - 2/10, 2026-06-13, Nuitée booking guest: "Hotel in horrible condition, nice location, friendly staff" Didn't like: The whole hotel is very outdated to put it nicely, the furniture is stained and run down, the carpets have stains and the aircondition had not been cleaned maybe never. Could not use it, since it emmitted a mouldy smell immediately to the room. Also the window sills were growing black mould. They advertised that they offer a ride from Kawaguchiko station to the hotel but when we called after reaching the station they told us that they cannot pick us up. After check in we found out that the AC in our room was not working and when reported, the staff were walking in and out of the room for an hour at 11 pm. We visited the bar in the evening to play pool. The staff was preparing a drink for other customers and asked us to wait to get the pool supplies. The air conditioning didn’t work properly to warm the room, and the bedding didn’t feel clean. The bathroom was extremely small, and towels were limited — we had to ask for more. Also, there’s no coffee available in the morning unless you’ve selected breakfast.
