Beijing is vast, and hotels further out add an hour of travel a day. 2. **Be near a metro station.** Beijing's metro is cheap and signed in English, and traffic is heavy. A hotel within about 5 minutes of a station saves time every day. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's main station. 3. **Check the hotel accepts foreign guests.** Mid-range and upscale hotels almost always do; some hutong guesthouses and budget hotels cannot register foreign passports. Trip.com shows this on the hotel page. 4. **Book the Forbidden City ahead.** Tickets are sold online in advance with your passport, sell out at busy times, and the palace is closed on most Mondays. ## 1. Wangfujing and Dongcheng: best for a first trip near the Forbidden City **Why stay here.** Beijing's central shopping street, a 15 to 20-minute walk from the Forbidden City's east side and Tiananmen Square, with the hutongs of Dongcheng to the north. Split your stay Most visitors need one base. With 4 nights or more, try 2 near Wangfujing and 2 in a courtyard hotel near Houhai, with a day trip to the Great Wall. ## Where not to stay in Beijing - Hotels outside the 3rd Ring Road for a sightseeing trip. - Budget hotels and guesthouses that do not accept foreign guests: check before you pay. - Airport hotels for a city stay: Capital Airport is 20 minutes away by the Airport Express from Dongzhimen, Daxing Airport further. - Booking late for Golden Week (early October) and Chinese New Year. ## Tips for booking a hotel in Beijing - **Plan the Great Wall day.** Mutianyu is about 1.5 to 2 hours by car; book a driver or a tour, and go early. - **Set up payments before you fly.** Link a foreign card to Alipay or WeChat Pay: taxis, metro tickets and street food are paid by QR code. - **Sort out mobile data.** Google, WhatsApp and Instagram are blocked on Chinese networks; a roaming plan or a travel eSIM from abroad keeps them working. - **Drop your bags before check-in.** Most hotels keep luggage before check-in and after check-out, so you can sightsee on arrival and departure days. - **Compare a few hotels side by side.** Every area above lets you compare its top picks by score, typical price and walk before you book. ## Questions **Where is the best place to stay in Beijing for first-timers?** Wangfujing or Qianmen, close to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. Staylist World lists 29 hotels around Wangfujing, typically about $91 a night. **Where can I stay in Beijing for less?** Around Qianmen (typically about $90 a night), a short walk from Tiananmen, on metro lines 2 and 8. **Can foreigners stay in any hotel in Beijing?** Most mid-range and upscale hotels accept foreign guests; some guesthouses and budget hotels cannot register foreign passports. Check the policy on the hotel's Trip.com page before booking. **How many days do I need in Beijing?** Three days covers the Forbidden City, Tiananmen, the Temple of Heaven, a hutong evening and a day at the Great Wall. ## Our verdict For a first trip, book Wangfujing or Qianmen: the Forbidden City and Tiananmen are on foot. Choose Houhai or the Lama Temple area for hutongs and a courtyard hotel, Sanlitun for nightlife, Guomao for luxury business hotels, and Beijing South for early trains. ## More - All hotels in Beijing: https://staylist.world/hotels-in/beijing-cn - China travel guide (visa, payments, apps): https://staylist.world/china-travel-guide How we compared: each hotel belongs to its nearest area centre (within walking distance) and is counted once.
