Chongqing is huge, so a hotel out of town adds a lot of travel. 2. **Expect stairs and slopes.** Chongqing is built on steep hills: streets connect by stairs, escalators and footbridges. Check the walk on the map, and pack light. 3. **Use the metro and the cableway.** The monorail and metro handle the hills well, and the Yangtze River Cableway crosses to the south bank. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's centre. 4. **Check the hotel accepts foreign guests.** Mid-range and upscale hotels almost always do; some budget hotels cannot register foreign passports. Trip.com shows this on the hotel page. ## 1. Jiefangbei: best for a first trip in the city centre **Why stay here.** The Liberation Monument at the heart of the Yuzhong peninsula, surrounded by malls, hotpot restaurants and night markets, with Hongyadong a 10-minute walk. Metro lines 1 and 2 stop around it, and the Yangtze River Cableway is close. **The catch.** The city is steep and layered, so a building's ground floor can be its tenth floor; it is crowded and loud at night. - Good for: first-timers, food lovers, nightlife - Not ideal for: quiet streets - By the numbers: 38 hotels, typically about $35 a night (most $29 to $71), average score 9.2 Best hotels in Jiefangbei: 1. Split your stay Two nights in Jiefangbei or Chaotianmen is enough for most visitors; combine it with Chengdu, 1 to 1.5 hours away by high-speed train, or a Yangtze cruise. ## Where not to stay in Chongqing - Hotels far from a metro or monorail station: the hills make walking slow. - Budget hotels that do not accept foreign guests: check before you pay. - Station hotels for a whole stay. - Booking late for Golden Week (early October) and Chinese New Year. ## Tips for booking a hotel in Chongqing - **See Hongyadong late.** The lights come on at dusk and the crowds thin after about 10 pm. - **Swim above the rivers.** Several towers on the peninsula put pools on their high floors. At Chongqing Indition High Altitude Hotel, on the 38th floor above Chaotianmen metro, a heated infinity pool looks over the rivers and Raffles City. [See the hotel's reviews and prices](https://staylist.world/hotels/trip-88308956). - **Watch the train go through a building.** At Liziba station on monorail line 2, the train runs straight through a residential tower; there is a viewing platform below. - **Set up payments before you fly.** Link a foreign card to Alipay or WeChat Pay: taxis, metro tickets and hotpot are paid by QR code. - **Sort out mobile data.** Google, WhatsApp and Instagram are blocked on Chinese networks; a roaming plan or a travel eSIM from abroad keeps them working. - **Compare a few hotels side by side.** Every area above lets you compare its top picks by score, typical price and walk before you book. ## Questions **Where is the best place to stay in Chongqing for first-timers?** Jiefangbei, in the centre of the Yuzhong peninsula: Hongyadong, the hotpot streets and the metro are close. Staylist World lists 38 hotels there, typically about $35 a night. **Where should I stay in Chongqing for Hongyadong?** Around Chaotianmen and Hongyadong (typically about $52 a night), many with river views, or in Jiefangbei, a 10-minute walk away. **Is Chongqing hard to get around?** It is hilly and layered, so maps can be confusing, but the metro, monorail, escalators and cableway make it manageable. Use Amap or Apple Maps and DiDi for taxis. **Is Chongqing English friendly?** Not at street level: most local restaurants and taxi drivers don't speak English. Metro signs and announcements are in English, and a translation app, your hotel's address in Chinese and DiDi (which has an English interface) cover most situations. **How many days do I need in Chongqing?** Two days covers Hongyadong, Jiefangbei, the cableway, Ciqikou old town and a hotpot night. ## Our verdict For a first trip, book Jiefangbei or Chaotianmen: Hongyadong, the hotpot streets and the river views are on foot. Choose Nan'an for skyline views, Lianglukou or Guanyinqiao for value, and Chongqing North for early trains to Chengdu. ## More - All hotels in Chongqing: https://staylist.world/hotels-in/chongqing-cn - China travel guide (visa, payments, apps): https://staylist.world/china-travel-guide How we compared: each hotel belongs to its nearest area centre (within walking distance) and is counted once.
