Page: https://staylist.world/where-to-stay-in-harbin ## Quick answer - **Festival first trip:** Central Street (about $22 a night). The old town, Zhaolin Park's ice lanterns and the frozen river on foot. - **Ice and Snow World at night:** Songbei (about $25 a night). A short ride back after the light show, when it is coldest. - **Trains to Snow Town or Yabuli:** Harbin Station (about $16 a night) and Harbin West (about $22 a night). The stations for day trips and onward travel. ## The areas at a glance | Area | Known for | Typical price a night | Transit (1-5) | Evenings (1-5) | Average hotel score | Hotels | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Central Street and St Sophia | Russian-era old town, restaurants, the frozen river | $22 | 4 | 4 | 9.3 | 43 | | Songbei (Ice and Snow World and Sun Island) | Ice and Snow World, Sun Island, newer hotels | $25 | 2 | 2 | 8.5 | 8 | | Harbin Railway Station | trains, value, between the old town and the centre | $16 | 5 | 3 | 8.8 | 14 | | Hongbo Square and Qiulin | shopping, metro, local life | $21 | 4 | 3 | 9.4 | 7 | | Harbin West Station | high-speed trains, Wanda Plaza | $22 | 4 | 2 | 8.8 | 10 | Typical price: the median nightly rate of the area's hotels on Staylist World. Transit and evenings are our own ratings of rail links and nightlife after about 9 pm. ## 4 rules before you choose an area 1. **Decide between the ice and the old town.** The Ice and Snow World is best after dark, across the river in Songbei. Stay in Songbei to get back fast in the cold; stay near Central Street for the restaurants, St Sophia and the frozen river, and take a taxi to the ice. 2. **Book early for the festival weeks.** Harbin has been one of China's busiest winter destinations since its viral 2024 season, and prices rise sharply around New Year's Day and Chinese New Year (6 February 2027). The prices on this page are typical prices we observed outside the festival; expect much more for festival dates. Book as soon as your dates are set, ideally with free cancellation. 3. **Check the heating and the window.** Rooms in Harbin are heated centrally and are usually warm, even too warm and dry; a humidifier helps. What guests complain about in winter is single-glazed windows, draughty rooms and broken heating, so read each hotel's 1–2 star reviews. 4. **Check the hotel accepts foreign guests.** Mid-range and upscale hotels almost always do; some small and budget hotels cannot register foreign passports. Trip.com shows this on the hotel page, and our hotel pages flag it. ## 1. Central Street and St Sophia: best for a first trip and the old town **Why stay here.** Harbin's pedestrian Central Street (Zhongyang Dajie), paved with old stone and lined with early-20th-century Russian and European buildings, runs down to the Songhua River, where the ice slides and sleds are set up in winter. St Sophia Cathedral, Zhaolin Park's ice lanterns and most of the famous restaurants are a short walk away. **The catch.** The Ice and Snow World is across the river, about 20 to 30 minutes by taxi, and taxis are hard to find when the light show ends. Central Street is crowded on festival evenings. - Good for: first-timers, food lovers, short stays, couples - Not ideal for: travellers who want to walk to the Ice and Snow World - By the numbers: 43 hotels, typically about $22 a night (most $16 to $38), average score 9.3 Best hotels in Central Street: 1. Songbei (Ice and Snow World and Sun Island): best for the Ice and Snow World **Why stay here.** The new district north of the Songhua River, home to the Ice and Snow World and the snow sculptures on Sun Island. Hotels here are newer and roomier, and some are close enough to get back quickly after the evening light show, when the cold is hardest. **The catch.** Outside the festival there is little to do in the evening, and the old town and its restaurants are a taxi ride away across the river. - Good for: Ice and Snow World at night, families, travellers who hate the cold - Not ideal for: old-town atmosphere and nightlife - By the numbers: 8 hotels, typically about $25 a night (most $13 to $74), average score 8.5 Best hotels in Songbei: 1. Harbin Railway Station: best for trains and value near the centre **Why stay here.** The main station for trains across northeast China, including to Yabuli and China Snow Town, about 15 minutes' walk from St Sophia Cathedral and the start of Central Street. Hotels here are among the cheapest central options. **The catch.** Station streets are busy and plain, and the cheapest hotels can be dated; read the bad reviews before you book. - Good for: train trips, value seekers, early departures - Not ideal for: a scenic base - By the numbers: 14 hotels, typically about $16 a night (most $10 to $31), average score 8.8 Best hotels near Harbin Station: 1. Hongbo Square and Qiulin: best for shopping and a local base **Why stay here.** The modern centre of Nangang district, with department stores, the Qiulin shopping streets and underground malls that are a warm way to walk in January. Metro line 1 runs to the railway station and beyond. **The catch.** It has none of the old town's atmosphere, and the ice sites need a taxi. - Good for: longer stays, shoppers, repeat visitors - Not ideal for: first-timers who want the sights on foot - By the numbers: 7 hotels, typically about $21 a night (most $17 to $35), average score 9.4 Best hotels in Hongbo Square: 1. [Yitel Zhishang Hotel (Harbin Railway Station Museum Subway Station)](https://staylist.world/hotels/trip-39946144) — guest rating 9.6 from 2,554 reviews · 4-star · typically $21/night · area: Nan'gang District · 300 m to Museum of Heilongjiang Province · gym, parking 2. Harbin West Station: best for high-speed trains **Why stay here.** The high-speed station for trains to Beijing, Shenyang, Changchun and Dalian, with a Wanda Plaza and chain hotels around it. **The catch.** It is far from the old town and the ice sites, so it suits one night before an early train, not a whole stay. - Good for: early trains, one-night stopovers - Not ideal for: a sightseeing base - By the numbers: 10 hotels, typically about $22 a night (most $11 to $35), average score 8.8 Best hotels in Harbin West: 1. [Crystal Orange (Harbin West Railway Station Wanda Plaza)](https://staylist.world/hotels/trip-47638410) — guest rating 9.7 from 3,209 reviews · 4-star · typically $43/night · area: Nan'gang District · 50 m to Kaishengyuanguangchang · gym, parking 2. Split your stay Three nights is enough for most visitors: one evening at the Ice and Snow World, a day for Sun Island's snow sculptures and the frozen river, and a day for the old town, St Sophia and Zhaolin Park. Add two days for China Snow Town or Yabuli by train. ## Where not to stay in Harbin - Leaving the hotel booking until you arrive: festival weeks sell out, and prices only go up. - Hotels far from a metro station or the river in the old town: walking 20 minutes at -25 °C is harder than it looks. - Budget hotels whose bad reviews mention cold rooms or broken heating. - Harbin West for a whole stay: it is far from everything you came to see. ## Tips for booking a hotel in Harbin - **Go to the Ice and Snow World late in the afternoon.** Arrive before sunset (around 4 pm in January) to see the sculptures in daylight, then stay for the lights. Last season the park opened in mid-to-late December and stayed open until late February; check the official dates and ticket prices, which are announced closer to the season. - **Dress for -25 °C.** January nights in Harbin often fall below -20 °C. Wear thermal layers, insulated boots, a hat that covers your ears and mittens over thin gloves; phone batteries drain fast in the cold, so keep a power bank in an inside pocket. - **Plan your ride back.** Taxi queues at the Ice and Snow World are long when the light show ends. Book DiDi before you leave the park, or stay in Songbei and avoid the queue. - **Read the bad reviews before you book.** Winter complaints in Harbin are specific: cold rooms, noise from Central Street and old windows. Every hotel below links to its 1–2 star reviews. [Check any hotel's bad reviews](https://staylist.world/bad-reviews). - **Set up payments before you fly.** Link a foreign card to Alipay or WeChat Pay: taxis, tickets and street food are paid by QR code. [How to set up Alipay as a foreigner](https://staylist.world/alipay-for-foreigners). - **Sort out mobile data.** Google, WhatsApp and Instagram are blocked on Chinese networks; a roaming plan or a travel eSIM bought before you fly keeps them working, and maps work offline only if you download them first. ## Questions **Where should I stay for the Harbin Ice Festival?** Near Central Street for a first trip: the old town, St Sophia Cathedral, Zhaolin Park's ice lanterns and the frozen Songhua River are on foot, and the Ice and Snow World is 20 to 30 minutes away by taxi. Staylist World lists 43 hotels there, typically about $22 a night outside the festival weeks. Stay in Songbei to be closest to the Ice and Snow World. **Which hotels are closest to Harbin Ice and Snow World?** Hotels in Songbei, north of the Songhua River, where the Ice and Snow World and Sun Island are. Staylist World lists 8 hotels there; check each one's distance on the map, because Songbei is spread out. **When is the Harbin Ice Festival 2027?** The 2026–27 dates have not been announced yet. Last season, the Ice and Snow World opened in mid-to-late December and ran until late February, and the festival's official opening is traditionally on 5 January. We will update this page when the dates are confirmed. **How cold is Harbin in January?** Very cold: daytime highs are usually around -12 °C to -15 °C, and nights often fall below -20 °C. Dress in layers, and plan short walks between warm places. **How many days do I need in Harbin?** Three days covers the Ice and Snow World, Sun Island's snow sculptures, Central Street, St Sophia and the frozen river. Add one or two days for China Snow Town or Yabuli. **Can foreigners stay in any hotel in Harbin?** Most hotels on international booking sites accept foreign guests, but some small and budget hotels cannot register foreign passports. Check that the listing says it accepts guests from all countries before you pay. ## Our verdict For the Ice Festival, stay near Central Street for a first trip: the old town, Zhaolin Park's ice lanterns and the frozen river are on foot, and the Ice and Snow World is a taxi ride away. Choose Songbei if the night light show is the reason you came, and the railway station or Hongbo Square to spend less. Book as soon as your dates are set. ## More - All hotels in Harbin: https://staylist.world/hotels-in/harbin-cn - China travel guide (visa, payments, apps): https://staylist.world/china-travel-guide How we compared: each hotel belongs to its nearest area centre (within walking distance) and is counted once.
