The Star Ferry and the MTR link them in minutes. 2. **Be near an MTR station.** The MTR is fast and air-conditioned. A hotel within about 5 minutes of a station makes the heat and the hills easy. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's main station. 3. **Expect small rooms.** Hong Kong rooms are among the smallest anywhere, often under 15 m² below luxury level. Check the room size before you book. 4. **Get an Octopus card.** One card for the MTR, buses, trams, ferries and convenience stores. ## 1. Tsim Sha Tsui: best for a first trip and harbour views **Why stay here.** The tip of Kowloon facing the Hong Kong Island skyline: the waterfront promenade and the nightly Symphony of Lights, the Avenue of Stars, the museums, Canton Road's shopping and the Star Ferry to Central. Two MTR lines serve it. **The catch.** It is crowded, Nathan Road is noisy, and rooms are small; some budget guesthouses are very basic. - Good for: first-timers, families, shoppers, skyline views - Not ideal for: quiet streets - By the numbers: 57 hotels, typically about $102 a night (most $39 to $229), average score 7.8 - What guests say: in 17 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the location (11) and staff (10); the most common complaints are about dated rooms (3) and breakfast (3) Best hotels in Tsim Sha Tsui: 1. The Island line MTR stops here. **The catch.** The lanes up from the harbour are steep. - Good for: couples, repeat visitors, design and food lovers - Not ideal for: heavy luggage - By the numbers: 15 hotels, typically about $159 a night (most $82 to $276), average score 8.0 Best hotels in Sheung Wan: 1. Split your stay Most visitors need one base. For 5 nights or more, try 3 in Tsim Sha Tsui and 2 in Central or Sheung Wan to see both sides of the harbour. ## Where not to stay in Hong Kong - The most basic guesthouses in Tsim Sha Tsui's older blocks if you need space or a window. - Hotels far from the MTR, especially in summer heat. - Booking during big trade fairs in Wan Chai without checking prices. - Hotels near the airport for a city trip: the Airport Express reaches Central in about 25 minutes. ## Tips for booking a hotel in Hong Kong - **Take the Airport Express.** Trains run to Kowloon Station and Hong Kong Station in about 20 to 25 minutes. - **Ask for a harbour view.** Harbour-view rooms cost more but are the reason many people stay in Tsim Sha Tsui or on the island waterfront. - **Book early for peak dates.** Chinese New Year, Art Basel (March) and big trade fairs push prices up. Book with free cancellation. - **Drop your bags before check-in.** Most hotels keep luggage before check-in and after check-out, so you can sightsee on arrival and departure days. - **Compare a few hotels side by side.** Every area above lets you compare its top picks by score, typical price and walk before you book. ## Questions **Where is the best place to stay in Hong Kong for first-timers?** Tsim Sha Tsui: the harbour promenade, the Star Ferry to Central and two MTR lines are on your doorstep. Staylist World lists 57 hotels there, typically about $102 a night. **Is it better to stay in Kowloon or on Hong Kong Island?** Kowloon (Tsim Sha Tsui, about $102 a night) for value, markets and skyline views. The island (Central, about $676 a night) for luxury, nightlife and the Peak. The Star Ferry crosses in under 10 minutes. **Where can I stay in Hong Kong for less?** Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei (typically about $48 a night), Causeway Bay and North Point have the most budget hotels, all on the MTR. **How many nights should I stay in Hong Kong?** Three or four nights covers the harbour, the Peak, the markets and a day on Lantau Island to see the Big Buddha. ## Our verdict For a first trip, book Tsim Sha Tsui for the skyline, the Star Ferry and shopping. Choose Central for luxury and nightlife, Sheung Wan for old Hong Kong and cafés, Wan Chai for conventions and bars, and Mong Kok, Causeway Bay or North Point to spend less. ## More - All hotels in Hong Kong: https://staylist.world/hotels-in/hong-kong-hk How we compared: each hotel belongs to its nearest area centre (within walking distance) and is counted once.
