A hotel within about 5 minutes of it, or of a ferry pier, saves time every day. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's main stop or sight. 3. **Check the hills.** Galata, Cihangir and parts of Beyoğlu are very steep. With luggage, check the walk on the map. 4. **Get an Istanbulkart.** One rechargeable card covers trams, metros, ferries, buses and the funicular. ## 1. Sultanahmet: best for a first trip and the great monuments **Why stay here.** The old city: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Basilica Cistern are all a few minutes' walk apart, and the Grand Bazaar is 15 minutes away. The T1 tram runs through it, and many small family-run hotels have rooftop terraces with Bosphorus views. **The catch.** It is touristy, with carpet-shop touts and tourist-menu restaurants, and it goes quiet at night. - Good for: first-timers, history lovers, families, short stays - Not ideal for: nightlife - By the numbers: 66 hotels, typically about $84 a night (most $49 to $147), average score 8.5 - What guests say: in 10 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the breakfast (6) and location (4) Best hotels in Sultanahmet: 1. Sultanahmet is a 10-minute walk uphill and the T1 tram stops here. **The catch.** It is busy, noisy and traffic-heavy by day, and there is little to do in the evening. - Good for: ferry trips, value seekers, travellers crossing to the Asian side - Not ideal for: quiet streets - By the numbers: 32 hotels, typically about $88 a night (most $57 to $155), average score 8.2 Best hotels in Sirkeci: 1. Sultanahmet is about 10 minutes by tram. **The catch.** It is commercial and plain, built around wholesale trade rather than sightseeing. - Good for: budget travellers, shoppers, value seekers - Not ideal for: charm and nightlife - By the numbers: 37 hotels, typically about $65 a night (most $49 to $121), average score 7.5 Best hotels in Laleli: 1. Galata and Karaköy: best for cafés, design hotels and views **Why stay here.** Across the Galata Bridge from the old city: the Galata Tower, cobbled lanes of cafés and boutiques, Karaköy's restaurants by the water and the Istanbul Modern museum. The T1 tram at Karaköy and ferries link it to Sultanahmet and the Asian side. **The catch.** The streets are very steep, and hotels cost more than in the old city. - Good for: couples, design lovers, food lovers, repeat visitors - Not ideal for: travellers with heavy luggage - By the numbers: 20 hotels, typically about $201 a night (most $126 to $373), average score 7.5 - What guests say: in 9 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the staff (7) and location (5) Best hotels in Galata: 1. The M2 metro stops at Taksim, and the funicular drops to the Kabataş ferry and tram. **The catch.** İstiklal is packed day and night, the side streets are loud late, and the old city is 20 to 30 minutes away. - Good for: nightlife, young travellers, food lovers, shoppers - Not ideal for: light sleepers - By the numbers: 31 hotels, typically about $130 a night (most $75 to $219), average score 7.6 - What guests say: in 9 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the location (5) and staff (5); the most common complaints are about breakfast (2) Best hotels in Taksim: 1. Split your stay For 5 nights or more, try 3 in Sultanahmet for the monuments, then 2 or 3 in Galata or Kadıköy for food and evenings out. ## Where not to stay in Istanbul - Hotels far from a tram, metro or ferry: Istanbul's traffic is slow. - Booking only on a hotel's "Taksim" or "Sultanahmet" name: check the walk on the map. - Following touts into carpet shops near the monuments. - The streets just off İstiklal if you sleep early. ## Tips for booking a hotel in Istanbul - **Book early for peak dates.** Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the best months and the busiest. Book with free cancellation. - **Check the airport route.** Istanbul Airport is about an hour from the centre by Havaist bus, or by the M11 metro from Gayrettepe; Sabiha Gökçen is on the Asian side. - **Ask about the rooftop.** Many Sultanahmet hotels have breakfast terraces with views of the Bosphorus or the mosques. - **Expect the call to prayer.** Hotels next to mosques hear the call to prayer five times a day, including before dawn. - **Drop your bags before check-in.** Most hotels keep luggage before check-in and after check-out, so you can sightsee on arrival and departure days. - **Compare a few hotels side by side.** Every area above lets you compare its top picks by score, typical price and walk before you book. ## Questions **Where is the best place to stay in Istanbul for first-timers?** Sultanahmet: the great monuments are a short walk apart and the T1 tram runs to the bazaars and Galata. Staylist World lists 66 hotels there, typically about $84 a night. **Is it better to stay in Sultanahmet or Taksim?** Sultanahmet for the monuments and quiet nights (about $84 a night). Taksim and Galata for nightlife, cafés and restaurants (about $130 a night). They are 20 to 30 minutes apart by tram and funicular, or on foot across the Galata Bridge. **Should I stay on the European or Asian side of Istanbul?** The European side for a first trip: the monuments, bazaars and Beyoğlu are there. Kadıköy, on the Asian side, is great for food and local life, with ferries to the old city in about 20 minutes. **Where should I stay in Istanbul for one night near the airport?** For Istanbul Airport, book an airport hotel or stay in Şişli near Gayrettepe, where the M2 metro meets the M11 airport line. Havaist buses also run from Taksim and Sultanahmet. For Sabiha Gökçen, stay on the Asian side. ## Our verdict For a first trip, book Sultanahmet: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı are on your doorstep. Choose Galata or Beyoğlu for cafés and nightlife, Sirkeci for ferries and transport, Laleli for value, and Kadıköy or Beşiktaş for local life once you know the city. ## More - All hotels in Istanbul: https://staylist.world/hotels-in/istanbul-tr How we compared: each hotel belongs to its nearest area centre (within walking distance) and is counted once.
