Baixa is flat; Alfama, Bairro Alto and Graça are steep. With luggage or limited mobility, check the slope on the map. 2. **Be near a metro station or tram.** A hotel within about 5 minutes of a metro station saves time every day. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's centre. 3. **Expect the city tax.** Lisbon charges a tax per person per night, usually paid at the hotel and not always in the online price. 4. **Check the noise.** Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré party late. Light sleepers should stay in Baixa, on the Avenida or in Saldanha. ## 1. Baixa and Rossio: best for a first trip and flat walking **Why stay here.** The grid of streets rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, between Rossio Square and the riverfront Praça do Comércio. It is the one flat part of central Lisbon, with metro stations, trams and funiculars to the hills on both sides. **The catch.** It is touristy, with restaurant touts on Rua Augusta, and quieter at night than Bairro Alto. - Good for: first-timers, families, travellers who want to avoid hills - Not ideal for: a local-neighbourhood feel - By the numbers: 15 hotels, typically about $275 a night (most $213 to $423), average score 7.7 Best hotels in Baixa: 1. Split your stay Most visitors need one base. For a week, add a few nights in Cascais or Sintra, both under an hour away by train. ## Where not to stay in Lisbon - Hotels on the steepest streets if you have heavy luggage. - Bairro Alto if you sleep early. - Hotels far from a metro or tram stop sold as "central". - Booking late for June, when the Santo António festivities fill the city. ## Tips for booking a hotel in Lisbon - **Use the metro from the airport.** The red metro line runs from the airport to Saldanha and beyond in about 20 minutes. - **Book early for peak dates.** June's festivals, summer and big conferences fill hotels first. Book with free cancellation. - **Ride tram 28 early.** The famous tram through Alfama is packed by mid-morning. Go early or walk the route. - **Drop your bags before check-in.** Most hotels keep luggage before check-in and after check-out, so you can sightsee on arrival and departure days. - **Compare a few hotels side by side.** Every area above lets you compare its top picks by score, typical price and walk before you book. ## Questions **Where is the best place to stay in Lisbon for first-timers?** Baixa or Chiado: central, close to the river and the metro, with the least climbing. Staylist World lists 15 hotels in Baixa, typically about $275 a night. **Is Bairro Alto a good area to stay in?** For nightlife, yes; for sleep, choose Chiado just below it (hotels typically about $374 a night), where you are close to the bars without the late-night noise. **Where can I stay in Lisbon for less?** Saldanha and Marquês de Pombal (typically about $158 a night), on the metro to the old town and the airport. **Is Alfama a good place to stay?** For atmosphere, fado and views, yes. It is steep and cobbled, so it is hard with heavy luggage. ## Our verdict For a first trip, book Baixa or Chiado: the squares, the river and the nightlife are close, with the least climbing. Choose Alfama for old Lisbon and fado, the Avenida for elegant hotels, Saldanha for value and the airport metro, and Parque das Nações for families. ## More - All hotels in Lisbon: https://staylist.world/hotels-in/lisbon-pt How we compared: each hotel belongs to its nearest area centre (within walking distance) and is counted once.
