A hotel inside or next to the centre saves you buses and taxis every day. 2. **Or stay near a metro station.** Rome's metro is small: lines A and B cross at Termini. If you stay outside the centre, be within about 5 minutes of a station. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's main sight or station. 3. **Don't drive into the centre.** The historic centre is a limited traffic zone (ZTL) with camera fines. If you have a rental car, choose a hotel outside the zone with parking. 4. **Mind the cobbles and the stairs.** Cobbled lanes and old buildings without lifts are hard with big suitcases. Check the room details and whether there is a lift. ## 1. Centro Storico (Pantheon and Piazza Navona): best for a first trip and walking everywhere **Why stay here.** The historic heart: the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campo de' Fiori's morning market and a maze of lanes with trattorias and wine bars. The Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and even the Forum and the Vatican are within walking distance, and the piazzas are magical at night. **The catch.** It is the most expensive area, there is no metro station inside it, rooms in old palazzi are often small, and the busiest piazzas are noisy late. - Good for: first-timers, couples, walkers, short stays - Not ideal for: tight budgets and light sleepers - By the numbers: 33 hotels, typically about $575 a night (most $308 to $958), average score 8.6 - What guests say: in 23 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the location (19) and staff (17); the most common complaints are about breakfast (7) and small rooms (5) Best hotels in the Centro Storico: 1. Spanish Steps and Trevi: best for luxury, shopping and the metro **Why stay here.** The Tridente, three straight streets fanning out from Piazza del Popolo, with Via Condotti's designer shops at the foot of the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain a few minutes south. Metro line A stops at Spagna, Barberini and Flaminio, and Villa Borghese's park is up the hill. **The catch.** Prices are high, and the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps are crowded from morning to late evening. - Good for: shoppers, couples, luxury stays, first-timers who want the metro - Not ideal for: budget travellers - By the numbers: 45 hotels, typically about $520 a night (most $278 to $926), average score 8.3 - What guests say: in 27 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the location (22) and staff (21); the most common complaints are about small rooms (5) and breakfast (3) Best hotels in the Spanish Steps: 1. Monti and the Colosseum: best for the Colosseum and a neighbourhood feel **Why stay here.** Rome's oldest neighbourhood, a few minutes' walk from the Colosseum and the Roman Forum: ivy-covered lanes, vintage shops, wine bars and the little square of Piazza della Madonna dei Monti. Metro line B stops at Cavour and Colosseo, and Termini is a 15-minute walk. **The catch.** It is hilly, the hotel choice is smaller than in the centre, and the Vatican is 30 minutes or more away. - Good for: first-timers, food and wine lovers, couples, ancient-Rome sightseeing - Not ideal for: a base close to the Vatican - By the numbers: 22 hotels, typically about $293 a night (most $211 to $392), average score 7.7 Best hotels in Monti: 1. Termini: best for value, trains and the airport **Why stay here.** Rome's main station: the Leonardo Express to Fiumicino Airport (about 32 minutes), high-speed trains to Florence and Naples, both metro lines and most bus routes. Hotels are the cheapest in central Rome, and Santa Maria Maggiore and the Baths of Diocletian are close. **The catch.** The streets around the station, especially in Esquilino, are busy, gritty and not pretty, more so at night, and the Pantheon is a 25-minute walk. - Good for: budget travellers, early trains and flights, day trips to Florence or Naples - Not ideal for: a romantic trip - By the numbers: 55 hotels, typically about $264 a night (most $161 to $420), average score 7.4 - What guests say: in 15 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the location (11) and staff (10); the most common complaints are about staff or check-in (3) and small rooms (2) Best hotels in Termini: 1. Trastevere: best for charm, trattorias and nightlife **Why stay here.** Cobbled lanes, ivy and laundry lines across the Tiber: trattorias, bars and the golden mosaics of Santa Maria in Trastevere. Campo de' Fiori is a 10-minute walk over the Ponte Sisto, and tram 8 runs to the centre. **The catch.** It is loud at night, there are few hotels, and there is no metro. - Good for: couples, foodies, nightlife, repeat visitors - Not ideal for: light sleepers and travellers who want the metro - By the numbers: 9 hotels, typically about $336 a night (most $268 to $632), average score 8.1 Best hotels in Trastevere: 1. St Peter's, the Vatican Museums and Castel Sant'Angelo are walkable, and metro line A stops at Ottaviano and Lepanto. **The catch.** Evenings are quiet, and the Colosseum and Monti are 30 to 40 minutes away. - Good for: families, Vatican visits, travellers who want quiet nights - Not ideal for: nightlife - By the numbers: 19 hotels, typically about $241 a night (most $162 to $296), average score 7.4 Best hotels in Prati: 1. Barberini metro (line A) is at the bottom of the street, and the Spanish Steps are a 10-minute walk. **The catch.** It is expensive, quiet in the evening, and less lively than its film-star past suggests. - Good for: luxury stays, couples, art lovers - Not ideal for: budget trips and nightlife - By the numbers: 28 hotels, typically about $585 a night (most $356 to $798), average score 8.1 - What guests say: in 11 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the location (8) and staff (7); the most common complaints are about small rooms (5) and staff or check-in (3) Best hotels in Via Veneto: 1. Testaccio and Aventine: best for local food and a quieter, local Rome **Why stay here.** A working-class district turned food lovers' favourite: the Testaccio market, classic Roman trattorias, and the Aventine Hill's orange garden and keyhole view of St Peter's above. Metro line B stops at Piramide, two stops from the Colosseum. **The catch.** It is south of the main sights and has few hotels. - Good for: food lovers, repeat visitors, longer stays - Not ideal for: a first trip that wants everything on foot - By the numbers: 5 hotels, typically about $156 a night (most $144 to $165), average score 7.5 Best hotels in Testaccio: 1. Paolo · parking ## Staying a week? Split your stay Most visitors need one base: the centre is compact. For a week, try 4 nights in the Centro Storico or Monti, then 3 in Trastevere or Prati for a different side of the city. ## Where not to stay in Rome - Hotels outside the ring of the Aurelian Walls sold as "Rome" unless they are next to a metro station. - The streets right around Termini if you want pretty, quiet evenings. - Driving: the ZTL fines cars entering the centre. - Rooms without a lift if you have heavy luggage. ## Tips for booking a hotel in Rome - **Book early for peak dates.** Easter, late spring, early autumn and big papal events fill hotels first. Book 2 to 4 months ahead, with free cancellation. - **Expect the city tax.** Rome charges a tax per person per night that rises with the hotel's star rating, usually paid at the hotel and not always in the online price. - **Check the air conditioning.** Summers are hot. Make sure the room has air conditioning from June to September. - **Book the Vatican and the Colosseum ahead.** Timed tickets sell out in high season, so book them when you book the hotel. - **Drop your bags before check-in.** Most hotels keep luggage before check-in and after check-out, so you can sightsee on arrival and departure days. - **Compare a few hotels side by side.** Every area above lets you compare its top picks by score, typical price and walk before you book. ## Questions **Where is the best place to stay in Rome for first-timers?** The Centro Storico, around the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, or Monti next to the Colosseum. You can walk to most sights from both. Staylist World lists 33 hotels in the Centro Storico, typically about $575 a night, and 22 in Monti, about $293. **Is it good to stay near Termini in Rome?** For value and transport, yes: Termini has the airport train, both metro lines and the cheapest central hotels (55 hotels, typically about $264 a night). The trade-off is the station area itself, which is busy and gritty at night. **Is Trastevere a good place to stay in Rome?** Yes, for charm, food and nightlife. It is loud at night and has no metro, but the centre is a 10-minute walk across the river. **Where should I stay in Rome near the Vatican?** Prati, the smart residential district beside the Vatican, with metro line A at Ottaviano and Lepanto. St Peter's and the Vatican Museums are a short walk. **How do I get from Fiumicino Airport to my hotel?** The Leonardo Express runs non-stop to Termini in about 32 minutes. From there, the metro or a taxi reaches most central hotels in 10 to 15 minutes. ## Our verdict For a first trip, book the Centro Storico, near the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, or Monti by the Colosseum: you will walk to almost everything. Choose the Spanish Steps for luxury and the metro, Trastevere for nightlife and charm, Prati for the Vatican and calm, and Termini for the best prices and the airport train. ## More - All hotels in Rome: https://staylist.world/hotels-in/rome-it How we compared: each hotel belongs to its nearest area centre (within walking distance) and is counted once.
