Stay inside the central 23 wards, and in practice in one of the areas below: a cheaper hotel further out costs you an hour or more of trains every day. 2. **Be 5 minutes from a station.** You will walk 15,000 to 20,000 steps a day anyway. A hotel within about 400 metres of a station saves minutes on every trip, four or five times a day. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's main station or sight. 3. **Prefer the Yamanote line.** The JR Yamanote line is a loop through Shinjuku, Shibuya, Tokyo Station, Akihabara and Ueno. A station on it, or on a metro line that crosses it, means few changes. 4. **Book by the map, not the name.** "Tokyo" or "Shinjuku" in a hotel's name does not make it central or close to the station. Check the walk on the map before you book. ## 1. Shinjuku: best for a first trip and nightlife **Why stay here.** Shinjuku Station is the busiest in the world: the JR Yamanote and Chuo lines, the Narita Express, the Odakyu Romancecar to Hakone and buses to Mount Fuji all leave from here. East of the tracks are department stores, the tiny bars of Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho, and the Kabukicho nightlife district. West of the tracks are office towers and the free observation decks of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, open into the evening. Shinjuku Gyoen garden is a 10-minute walk. **The catch.** The station has more than 200 exits and takes a day or two to learn. Kabukicho stays loud until morning, and Shinjuku sits on the west side, so Asakusa or Tokyo Disney are 40 minutes or more away. - Good for: first-timers, nightlife, day trips to Hakone and Mount Fuji, the widest choice of hotels - Not ideal for: anyone who wants quiet evenings close to the hotel - By the numbers: 42 hotels, typically about $123 a night (most $99 to $200), average score 7.7 - What guests say: in 16 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the staff (7) and location (6); the most common complaints are about small rooms (6) and staff or check-in (3) Best hotels in Shinjuku: 1. [Anshin oyado Tokyo Man Shinjuku](https://staylist.world/hotels/catalogue-gpl_ChIJJ8L_6dqMGGAR-ibwhw6hN8A) — guest rating 9.3 from 349 reviews · 2-star · typically $53/night · area: Shinjuku Ward · 250 m to Shinjuku · spa, parking · best for solo travellers, budget stays 2. [JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Shinjuku](https://staylist.world/hotels/catalogue-gpl_ChIJh7zrtdGMGGARK2IbCPWPqnU) — guest rating 9.1 from 1,088 reviews · 4-star · typically $211/night · area: Shibuya Ward · 310 m to Shinjuku · parking · best for city breaks, business trips 3. Tokyo Station and Marunouchi: best for the Shinkansen, airports and short stays **Why stay here.** Every Shinkansen to Kyoto, Osaka and the north starts here, the Narita Express and airport buses leave from the station, and the Keiyo line reaches Tokyo Disney Resort in about 15 minutes without changing trains. Marunouchi, between the station and the Imperial Palace East Gardens, is the business district, with some of the city's grandest hotels and shopping streets under the station. **The catch.** Offices empty after about 8 pm and the streets go quiet. Hotels here cost the most in Tokyo, and the station itself is a maze of platforms and underground passages. - Good for: short stays, early bullet trains, Disney days, travellers who want an easy airport run - Not ideal for: nightlife, or a tight budget - By the numbers: 15 hotels, typically about $443 a night (most $258 to $790), average score 8.2 - What guests say: in 11 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the location (10) and staff (7); the most common complaints are about breakfast (5) and noise (2) Best hotels near Tokyo Station: 1. [Yaesu Terminal Hotel](https://staylist.world/hotels/trip-5523596) — guest rating 8.8 from 439 reviews · 3-star · typically $98/night · area: Chuo Ward · 480 m to Nihombashi · parking 2. Ginza: best for shopping, food and a calm central base **Why stay here.** Tokyo's grand shopping street of flagship stores, department stores and galleries, with the Kabuki-za theatre and the Tsukiji Outer Market a short walk away. The main street, Chuo-dori, is closed to cars on weekend afternoons. The Ginza, Hibiya and Marunouchi metro lines connect it to Shinjuku, Shibuya and Ueno without changing, and Tokyo Station is a 10-minute walk. **The catch.** Expensive for hotels and restaurants, few budget rooms, and the area winds down early in the evening. - Good for: shoppers, food lovers, couples, families who want calm evenings - Not ideal for: budget trips and late nights out - By the numbers: 33 hotels, typically about $152 a night (most $124 to $298), average score 8.1 - What guests say: in 13 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the location (12) and staff (8); the most common complaints are about small rooms (2) and noise (2) Best hotels in Ginza: 1. Shimbashi and Shiodome: best for after-work bars next to Ginza **Why stay here.** Right next to Ginza: Shimbashi has crowded little bars and yakitori stalls under the railway arches, and Shiodome has modern towers with hotels on the upper floors and wide city views. It is on the JR Yamanote line, the Yurikamome line to Odaiba starts here, and Hamarikyu Gardens is a short walk. **The catch.** A business district first: many hotels are compact business hotels, the tower hotels of Shiodome push prices up, and weekends are quiet. - Good for: solo travellers, business trips, anyone who wants Ginza within walking distance - Not ideal for: travellers who want big rooms or a neighbourhood feel - By the numbers: 19 hotels, typically about $193 a night (most $102 to $358), average score 8.1 - What guests say: in 9 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the location (5) and views (5); the most common complaints are about small rooms (2) Best hotels in Shimbashi: 1. [Anshin oyado Tokyo Woman Ginza Shiodome](https://staylist.world/hotels/trip-6651752) — guest rating 9.4 from 181 reviews · 1-star · typically $50/night · area: Minato Ward · 460 m to Shiodome · spa, parking · best for solo women, budget travelers 2. Asakusa: best for old Tokyo, ryokan and value **Why stay here.** Old Tokyo around Senso-ji, the city's oldest temple, and Nakamise shopping street, beside the Sumida River with views of Tokyo Skytree. You will find ryokan-style inns and good-value hotels, and the Toei Asakusa line runs straight through to both Narita and Haneda airports, which helps on arrival and departure days. Go to Senso-ji early in the morning or after dark, when the crowds have gone. **The catch.** It is a long way from the west side: Shibuya is 18 stops on the Ginza line, about 35 minutes. Most shops and many restaurants close by 8 or 9 pm. - Good for: culture seekers, families, budget travellers, airport-friendly stays - Not ideal for: nightlife, or an itinerary centred on Shibuya and Shinjuku - By the numbers: 43 hotels, typically about $79 a night (most $52 to $125), average score 8.7 - What guests say: in 12 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the staff (8) and location (3); the most common complaints are about small rooms (3) Best hotels in Asakusa: 1. [Grand MONday Asakusa(Former:MONday Apart Premium Asakusa)](https://staylist.world/hotels/catalogue-FGTYOASA) — guest rating 9.6 from 168 reviews · 4-star · typically $170/night · area: Taito Ward · 470 m to Tawaramachi · parking · best for families, longer stays 3. [Acoe Asakusa](https://staylist.world/hotels/trip-114452948) — guest rating 9.5 from 423 reviews · 3-star · typically $133/night · area: Taito Ward · 230 m to Tawaramachi · parking All hotels near Senso-ji, with distances: https://staylist.world/hotels-in/tokyo-jp/near/senso-ji ## 6. Ueno: best for budget stays and early Narita flights **Why stay here.** Ueno Park holds the Tokyo National Museum, other big museums and the zoo, and the Ameyoko market street runs beside the tracks. The Keisei Skyliner to Narita Airport leaves from Keisei Ueno, and JR Ueno Station is on the Yamanote line with Shinkansen trains to the north. Asakusa and Akihabara are one or two stops away. **The catch.** Less polished than central Tokyo, and the streets around Ameyoko are crowded and a little run-down. - Good for: budget travellers, families, museum lovers, early Narita departures - Not ideal for: luxury stays - By the numbers: 22 hotels, typically about $83 a night (most $75 to $121), average score 8.0 Best hotels in Ueno: 1. [Hotel Resol Ueno](https://staylist.world/hotels/catalogue-YXHNDRLU) — guest rating 9.2 from 909 reviews · 3-star · typically $121/night · area: Taito Ward · 70 m to Ueno · parking 2. [Washington R&B Hotel Ueno-hirokoji](https://staylist.world/hotels/trip-1005577) — guest rating 9.2 from 779 reviews · typically $53/night · area: Taito Ward All hotels near Ueno Station, with distances: https://staylist.world/hotels-in/tokyo-jp/near/ueno-station ## 7. Akihabara: best for anime, games and electronics **Why stay here.** Tokyo's electronics, anime and gaming district: multi-storey shops, arcades and themed cafés. It sits on the JR Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku and Sobu lines between Ueno and Tokyo Station, so most of the city is a direct ride away, and good-value business hotels are easy to find. **The catch.** The area is small and most shops close in the evening, so there is little to do at night. - Good for: anime and gaming fans, value seekers who still want the Yamanote line - Not ideal for: nightlife or a scenic neighbourhood - By the numbers: 16 hotels, typically about $85 a night (most $65 to $116), average score 8.1 Best hotels in Akihabara: 1. [Hotel Resol Stay Akihabara](https://staylist.world/hotels/catalogue-YXTYORSA) — guest rating 9.3 from 536 reviews · 3-star · typically $93/night · area: Chiyoda Ward · 300 m to Iwamotocho · parking 2. Ikebukuro: best for value on the Yamanote line **Why stay here.** A big shopping and transport hub in north-west Tokyo, with Sunshine City, large department stores and anime shops along Otome Road. It is on the JR Yamanote line and several metro lines, Shinjuku is about 10 minutes away, and hotels are often cheaper than in Shinjuku for a similar standard. **The catch.** It is at the northern edge of the centre, with fewer famous sights nearby, so you will ride the train most days. - Good for: budget travellers, longer stays, shoppers - Not ideal for: a first trip where you want to walk to the main sights - By the numbers: 31 hotels, typically about $78 a night (most $58 to $102), average score 8.0 Best hotels in Ikebukuro: 1. [Hatoya Hotel](https://staylist.world/hotels/trip-2216506) — guest rating 9.6 from 48 reviews · typically $39/night · area: Toshima Ward 2. Shibuya: best for youth culture, shopping and nightlife **Why stay here.** The scramble crossing, Shibuya Sky, fashion stores and late nights, with Harajuku, Omotesando and Yoyogi Park a short walk north. Shibuya Station is on the JR Yamanote line plus the Tokyu, Keio and several metro lines, and Shinjuku is one or two stops away. **The catch.** Rooms are smaller and pricier than in Shinjuku, the area is crowded at most hours, and it sits on the south-west side, so Asakusa and Tokyo Disney take 45 to 60 minutes. - Good for: young travellers, shoppers, nightlife, couples - Not ideal for: tight budgets and quiet evenings - By the numbers: 14 hotels, typically about $204 a night (most $124 to $449), average score 7.9 - What guests say: in 8 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the location (6) and cleanliness (3); the most common complaints are about small rooms (2) and noise (2) Best hotels in Shibuya: 1. Roppongi: best for art museums and an international crowd **Why stay here.** Roppongi Hills, Tokyo Midtown and some of the city's best art museums, including the Mori Art Museum and the National Art Center, with Tokyo Tower close by. Restaurants and bars stay open late, and many embassies and international firms are nearby. **The catch.** Not on the JR Yamanote line (only the Hibiya and Oedo metro lines), hotels are expensive, and the main crossing gets loud late at night. - Good for: art lovers, nightlife, travellers who want an international feel - Not ideal for: budget trips, or anyone relying on JR passes - By the numbers: 14 hotels, typically about $208 a night (most $121 to $537), average score 7.5 Best hotels in Roppongi: 1. [Hotel Villa Fontaine Grand Tokyo-Roppongi](https://staylist.world/hotels/catalogue-HSTYOAPN) — guest rating 9.0 from 366 reviews · 4-star · typically $123/night · area: Minato Ward · 130 m to Roppongi-Itchōme · parking 2. Shinagawa: best for Haneda flights and Shinkansen trips **Why stay here.** A Shinkansen stop on the line to Kyoto and Osaka, with Keikyu trains to Haneda Airport in about 15 minutes. It is on the southern side of the Yamanote line, and the hotels are mostly large business and chain hotels with reliable rooms. **The catch.** Few sights nearby and a business feel, so you will travel for most sightseeing. - Good for: early Haneda flights, Shinkansen day trips, business trips - Not ideal for: travellers who want to step out into a lively neighbourhood - By the numbers: 11 hotels, typically about $190 a night (most $138 to $550), average score 8.0 Best hotels in Shinagawa: 1. [Miyako City Tokyo Takanawa](https://staylist.world/hotels/catalogue-KYTYOTKW) — guest rating 8.9 from 354 reviews · 4-star · typically $138/night · area: Minato Ward · 600 m to Sengakuji · parking 2. Odaiba: better as a day trip than a base **Why stay here.** A man-made island in Tokyo Bay with shopping malls, seaside parks, a life-size Gundam statue and views back to Rainbow Bridge, reached by the Yurikamome and Rinkai lines. **The catch.** Far from the main sights, few hotels, and few direct trains, so most visitors come for the day and stay elsewhere. - Good for: a night with a bay view at the end of a trip - Not ideal for: a first-time base - By the numbers: 3 hotels, typically about $297 a night, average score 8.1 Best hotels in Odaiba: 1. [Hotel Trusty Tokyo Bayside](https://staylist.world/hotels/trip-759855) — guest rating 8.5 from 253 reviews · typically $90/night · area: Koto Ward 2. [Hilton Tokyo Odaiba](https://staylist.world/hotels/catalogue-HLTYO001) — guest rating 8.9 from 959 reviews · 5-star · typically $297/night · area: Minato Ward · 910 m to Tokyo International Cruise Terminal Station · pool, spa, gym 3. [Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba](https://staylist.world/hotels/catalogue-NKTYOGPH) — guest rating 9.4 from 1,817 reviews · 5-star · typically $316/night · area: Minato Ward · 640 m to Tokyo International Cruise Terminal Station · pool, gym, parking · best for sightseeing, families ## Staying a week? Split your stay For a week or more, split your stay: 3 or 4 nights on the west side (Shinjuku or Shibuya) for nightlife and day trips to Hakone or Mount Fuji, then 3 nights near Tokyo Station or Ginza for the east side, the Shinkansen and the airport. Hotels can forward your suitcase to the next hotel for about ¥2,000 to ¥3,000, so you move with a day bag. ## Where not to stay in Tokyo - Hotels outside the central wards or in suburbs sold as "Tokyo": cheaper, but you lose the saving in train time and fares. - Odaiba as a first-time base: it is an island in the bay, far from most sights. Go for the day. - Hotels more than 10 minutes' walk from a station, especially with luggage or children. - Kabukicho's back streets if you want early nights: stay on the west side of Shinjuku Station instead, which is calmer and still close. ## Tips for booking a hotel in Tokyo - **Book early for peak dates.** Cherry blossom season (late March to early April), Golden Week (late April to early May) and autumn leaves (November) sell out first. Book 3 to 6 months ahead, with free cancellation. - **Check the room size.** Tokyo rooms are small: a standard double is often 12 to 18 m². If you have big suitcases or children, filter for 20 m² or more. - **Twin and double are different.** A double is one bed; a twin is two. Two adults who want their own beds should book a twin. - **Breakfast saves time.** Few cafés open before 9 am outside the big stations, so a hotel breakfast gets you out the door earlier. - **Drop your bags before check-in.** Almost every hotel keeps luggage before check-in and after check-out, so you can sightsee on arrival and departure days. - **Compare a few hotels side by side.** Every area above lets you compare its top picks by score, typical price and walk to the station before you book. ## Questions **Where is the best place to stay in Tokyo for first-timers?** Shinjuku, or the area around Tokyo Station. Shinjuku has the most hotels (42 on Staylist World, typically about $123 a night), nightlife and direct trains to Hakone and Mount Fuji. Tokyo Station has the Shinkansen and the easiest airport links, but it is quiet at night and costs more. **Is it better to stay in Shinjuku or Shibuya?** Shinjuku for more choice and lower prices (42 hotels, about $123 a night) and day trips west. Shibuya for shopping and nightlife, with fewer and pricier rooms (14 hotels, about $204). They are two stops apart on the JR Yamanote line, so you can easily visit the other. **Is Asakusa a good place to stay?** Yes, for old Tokyo, ryokan-style stays and value (about $79 a night), and for direct trains to both airports. The trade-off is distance: Shibuya is about 35 minutes away on the Ginza line, and the area goes quiet by 9 pm. **Where should I stay in Tokyo for Disney?** Near Tokyo Station. The JR Keiyo line reaches Maihama, the Tokyo Disney Resort station, in about 15 minutes without changing trains. The Disney hotels themselves are in Chiba, outside central Tokyo. **Where should I stay in Tokyo for the airports?** Shinagawa for Haneda (Keikyu line, about 15 minutes), Ueno for Narita (Keisei Skyliner), and Asakusa for direct trains to both on the Toei Asakusa line. Tokyo Station and Shinjuku have the Narita Express and airport buses. **Is it better to stay near a train station in Tokyo?** Yes. Aim for a hotel within about 5 minutes' walk (around 400 m) of a station, ideally on the JR Yamanote line or a metro line that crosses it. You will use the station four or five times a day. ## Our verdict If it is your first trip and you are not sure, book Shinjuku (west side of the station for calmer nights) or a hotel near Tokyo Station if you are taking the Shinkansen. Choose Asakusa or Ueno to save money and see old Tokyo, Shibuya for nightlife and shopping, and Ginza for a calm, central base. Then pick a hotel within 5 minutes of the station. ## More - All hotels in Tokyo: https://staylist.world/hotels-in/tokyo-jp How we compared: each hotel belongs to its nearest area centre (within walking distance) and is counted once.
