DoubleTree by Hilton Kyoto Higashiyama is a clean new stay — close to the attractions, an elegant comfortable room, excellent patient service with a Chinese-speaking desk some call best in class, and a great breakfast. Caveats though are important: every non-tatami room faces the street and is genuinely noisy — a kind swap to a higher floor still proved loud, and moving to the tatami side costs extra; unless you book tatami, expect noise, and there is no full Chinese-language service.
