“El Capitan's split”
El Capitan Hotel is a beautiful unique stay for many — a renovated historic hotel with modern comforts in a great downtown Merced spot about fifteen minutes' walk from the station, handy as a Yosemite or Sequoia stopover, clean rooms, Beekman toiletries, an ice machine, sparkling water on the third floor, a microwave on request, a gym, indoor parking, friendly staff and excellent dining. Caveats though: a severe dissent warns a train passes multiple times nightly with unbearable noise and paper-thin walls — a Russian guest heard it honk but slept fine — and breakfast is not included, the restaurant is next door and the hairdryer is poor.
