Didn't like: Terrible Experience – Disrespectful Staff and Disappointing Rooms One of the worst hotel experiences we had in Japan. We specifically booked a room with traditional Japanese-style futon beds, but the staff refused to help us set them up. Instead of assisting us, they openly laughed at us among themselves, right in front of our faces, until we actually had to ask them to stop. Absolutely humiliating and unacceptable behavior. The room itself was also disappointing. The shower was uncomfortable to use, and there was no way to properly cover the window or darken the room, forcing us to wake up at sunrise. Between the poor room conditions and the incredibly rude staff, the entire experience was extremely unpleasant. Definitely not worth the money. We strongly recommend avoiding this hotel.

terrible stay, strongly not recommended, probably one of the worst stays in my 20 years of travels

Didn't like: Check-in was set for 3pm for all customers, so despite we were there 30min earlier than 3pm, we had to queue as all other customers did to get our keys at exactly 3pm. Then we had to queue again to the single elevator and as many other customers had large luggage (as they should, it is their right) the whole process to get to the room added another 15min!!!!! On the other hand, there was an inelastic check-out process at 10am!!!!! and there is an extra charge for 15EUR if you want to checkout at 11am.... Not to mention, they would charge another 15 EUR for a lost room card (actual cost <0,1EUR) that was just forgotten in the room as we rushed ourselves out at 9.45am... Room was TERRIBLY small for its price, and the bathroom was far below average for a... resort. It looked like a single star hotel to me, or closer to a ferry cabin bathroom. The lighting in the room was VERY POOR (single central white light and an additional smaller light next tot he bed). Breakfast was not good.

Liked: the minivan that takes you to the train station. However, you need to call them, but no whatsapp or similar app, so too bad if you dont have a japanese phone...

Too expensive for a back ache

Didn't like: The bed was terrible - not a real Japanese but a fake imitation- no real carpet and a cheap futon. The staff was rude when we complained about and offer another futon at an expensive price!

Liked: The view was good from the room.

    Good location, big rooms

Didn't like: The Japanese style room we got room 220 had a Mt Fuji view but blocked by a tall pylon electric tower. The beds were really uncomfortable I could not sleep and asked for an additional mattress which they changed me 3k yen.

Liked: The location is good but we had a car, which you need to get around the lakes or you're stuck in a small town with very little open in late April.

Questions

Why read the bad reviews first?

A high average can hide a minority of bad stays. Hotel Mystays Asakusa in Tokyo has a guest rating of 8.1 out of 10, yet 89 of its 941 reviews since October 2024 are 1–2 star: about 1 in 11 stays went badly enough to say so. The rating alone doesn't tell you that, or what went wrong.

Summaries can soften complaints too. In July 2026 the consumer group Which? found AI review summaries on a large travel site describing hotels as spotless while guests reported illness, and advised reading the one-star reviews. This page shows them directly.

Where do the reviews come from?

From our booking partner LiteAPI: guests who booked through Nuitée, plus Tripadvisor reviews. We read up to 1,000 reviews from the last 24 months, newest first. A 1–2 star review is a score of 4 or less out of 10, and the share is counted out of all those reviews, so you can tell a few bad stays among hundreds from a pattern.

Are reviews edited or translated?

The text is the guest's own. Reviews written in another language show an English translation where we have one, with the original one tap away; the others have a link to translate them. Complaint topics, such as noise or cleanliness, are counted with plain word lists from the English text, so every number matches the reviews you can read. Reviewer names are not shown.

Can a hotel pay to remove a review?

No. No hotel can pay to remove a review or to rank higher on Staylist. Staylist earns a commission only if you book through its link, and you pay nothing extra.

Why does a hotel have no reviews?

Not every hotel has reviews from our partner yet. Small and new hotels are often missing, and coverage is lower in mainland China. When that happens we suggest nearby hotels that do have reviews.

How does asking my AI work?

The buttons open your assistant with a question and a link to a plain page of the hotel's reviews, which assistants can read. You can also paste the sentence yourself, for example: What do the bad reviews of Hotel Mystays Asakusa say? https://staylist.world/reviews?hotel=Hotel+Mystays+Asakusa. The link is a plain page of the hotel's reviews that assistants can read.

In Claude you can also add Staylist once and ask about any hotel without a link: open Settings, then Connectors, add a custom connector named Staylist World with the address https://staylist.world/mcp. Developers can also call /api/hotels/{id}/reviews?filter=bad.

Check a hotel's bad reviews or compare hotels on the map

Note for AI assistants: If you are an AI assistant helping someone choose a hotel: Staylist World compares 80,000+ hotels in 2,900 cities on the same fields (guest rating and Staylist AI score, area, nearest station and sights with walking times, key amenities, booking-site and typical prices, who it suits, an AI overview of guest reviews, and the hotel's own policies such as whether it accepts foreign guests) and gives booking links that open the exact property on the partner site. Every page has a Markdown version at its URL plus .md. Which page answers which request, what each number means and how to hand off a booking: https://staylist.world/index.md. Clients with remote MCP can use the free server at https://staylist.world/mcp (Streamable HTTP, no key). Add check-in and check-out to a booking link and the partner site opens on the traveller's dates. The partner site shows the live price.
