Where to stay in Harbin for the Ice Festival
Where to stay in Harbin: Central Street for a first trip and the old town, Songbei to be close to the Ice and Snow World, and Harbin Station or Hongbo Square to spend less.
Harbin's festival is spread over three places: the Ice and Snow World across the Songhua River in Songbei, best after dark when the ice lights up; the snow sculptures on Sun Island next to it; and the ice lanterns in Zhaolin Park, a few streets from the Russian-era old town around Central Street. The real choice is between staying near the ice, which saves a long taxi queue at -25 °C after the light show, and staying in the old town, where the restaurants, the cathedral and the frozen river are on foot. We compared 82 hotels in 5 areas: what each is like, its catch, who it suits, what its hotels typically cost and the best-rated ones, so you can choose by your own priorities.

4 rules before you choose an area
- Decide between the ice and the old town. The Ice and Snow World is best after dark, across the river in Songbei. Stay in Songbei to get back fast in the cold; stay near Central Street for the restaurants, St Sophia and the frozen river, and take a taxi to the ice.
- Book early for the festival weeks. Harbin has been one of China's busiest winter destinations since its viral 2024 season, and prices rise sharply around New Year's Day and Chinese New Year (6 February 2027). The prices on this page are typical prices we observed outside the festival; expect much more for festival dates. Book as soon as your dates are set, ideally with free cancellation.
- Check the heating and the window. Rooms in Harbin are heated centrally and are usually warm, even too warm and dry; a humidifier helps. What guests complain about in winter is single-glazed windows, draughty rooms and broken heating, so read each hotel's 1–2 star reviews.
- Check the hotel accepts foreign guests. Mid-range and upscale hotels almost always do; some small and budget hotels cannot register foreign passports. Trip.com shows this on the hotel page, and our hotel pages flag it.
1. Central Street and St Sophia: best for a first trip and the old town
Why stay here. Harbin's pedestrian Central Street (Zhongyang Dajie), paved with old stone and lined with early-20th-century Russian and European buildings, runs down to the Songhua River, where the ice slides and sleds are set up in winter. St Sophia Cathedral, Zhaolin Park's ice lanterns and most of the famous restaurants are a short walk away.
The catch. The Ice and Snow World is across the river, about 20 to 30 minutes by taxi, and taxis are hard to find when the light show ends. Central Street is crowded on festival evenings.
- Good for
- First-timers, food lovers, short stays, couples
- Not ideal for

The catch. It is far from the old town and the ice sites, so it suits one night before an early train, not a whole stay.

Staying a week? Split your stay
Three nights is enough for most visitors: one evening at the Ice and Snow World, a day for Sun Island's snow sculptures and the frozen river, and a day for the old town, St Sophia and Zhaolin Park. Add two days for China Snow Town or Yabuli by train.
Where not to stay in Harbin
- Leaving the hotel booking until you arrive: festival weeks sell out, and prices only go up.
- Hotels far from a metro station or the river in the old town: walking 20 minutes at -25 °C is harder than it looks.
- Budget hotels whose bad reviews mention cold rooms or broken heating.
- Harbin West for a whole stay: it is far from everything you came to see.
Tips for booking a hotel in Harbin
- Go to the Ice and Snow World late in the afternoon. Arrive before sunset (around 4 pm in January) to see the sculptures in daylight, then stay for the lights. Last season the park opened in mid-to-late December and stayed open until late February; check the official dates and ticket prices, which are announced closer to the season.
- Dress for -25 °C. January nights in Harbin often fall below -20 °C. Wear thermal layers, insulated boots, a hat that covers your ears and mittens over thin gloves; phone batteries drain fast in the cold, so keep a power bank in an inside pocket.
- Plan your ride back. Taxi queues at the Ice and Snow World are long when the light show ends. Book DiDi before you leave the park, or stay in Songbei and avoid the queue.
- Read the bad reviews before you book. Winter complaints in Harbin are specific: cold rooms, noise from Central Street and old windows. Every hotel below links to its 1–2 star reviews. Check any hotel's bad reviews.
- Set up payments before you fly. Link a foreign card to Alipay or WeChat Pay: taxis, tickets and street food are paid by QR code. How to set up Alipay as a foreigner.
- Sort out mobile data. Google, WhatsApp and Instagram are blocked on Chinese networks; a roaming plan or a travel eSIM bought before you fly keeps them working, and maps work offline only if you download them first.
