Where to stay in Kyoto: a first-timer’s guide to 7 areas
Where to stay in Kyoto: Downtown for a first trip (hotels typically about $129 a night), Gion for old Kyoto and ryokan (about $185), and Kyoto Station for value and fast trains (about $94).
Kyoto's big sights are spread out and its buses are slow and crowded, so the area you pick decides how much of each day you spend getting around. A central base near a station covers most trips, and a night in a ryokan in Gion or Arashiyama adds what Kyoto is known for. We compared 208 hotels in 7 areas: what each is like, its catch, who it suits, what its hotels typically cost and the best-rated ones, so you can choose by your own priorities.

4 rules before you choose an area
- Stay central for a first trip. Downtown, Gion and the station area cover most first trips. The big sights are spread out, so a central base saves an hour or more a day.
- Be near a train or subway station. Kyoto's buses are slow and packed at peak times. A hotel within about 5 minutes of a subway, Keihan, Hankyu or JR station makes every day easier. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's centre.
- See the big sights early. Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera and the Arashiyama bamboo grove are calm before 8 am and packed by 10. Staying close to them, or near a station that reaches them fast, is worth a lot.
- Book by the map, not the name. "Kyoto" or "Gion" in a hotel's name does not mean it is in the centre. Check the walk on the map before you book.
1. Kyoto Station: best for transport, value and day trips
Why stay here. Every Shinkansen, the Haruka to Kansai Airport, airport buses, the Kintetsu line to Nara and the Karasuma subway leave from here, and Fushimi Inari is two stops away on the JR Nara line. The station area has the most hotels in Kyoto and many of the best-value ones, plus a big shopping complex and Kyoto Tower.
The catch. It is modern and has none of the old-Kyoto feel. Gion and Higashiyama are 15 to 20 minutes away by bus or subway, and the streets are quiet in the evening outside the station.
- Good for
- First-timers on a budget, rail passes, day trips to Nara and Osaka, early or late trains
- Not ideal for
- Travellers who want to step out into old Kyoto
By the numbers: 57 hotels, typically about $94 a night (most $64 to $155), average score 8.4. In 23 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the location (18) and breakfast (9); the most common complaints are about noise (4) and small rooms (3). Includes 2 female-only and 8 ryokan.

2. Downtown (Kawaramachi and Shijo): best for a first trip, food and evenings out
Why stay here. The grid of streets around Shijo and Kawaramachi: Nishiki Market, the Teramachi and Shinkyogoku covered arcades, department stores, and the bars and restaurants of Pontocho alley and Kiyamachi by the Kamo River. Gion is a 10-minute walk across the river, and Hankyu trains to Osaka leave from Kawaramachi and Karasuma.
The catch. It is the busiest part of the city: crowded arcades, traffic on Shijo and Kawaramachi, and smaller rooms than near the station.
- Good for
- First-timers, food lovers, couples, anyone who wants restaurants open in the evening
- Not ideal for
- A quiet, traditional setting
By the numbers: 49 hotels, typically about $129 a night (most $56 to $247), average score 8.8. In 18 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the staff (10) and location (8); the most common complaints are about small rooms (3). Includes 6 female-only, 1 capsule and 8 ryokan.

3. Gion and Higashiyama: best for old Kyoto, ryokan and early-morning temples
Why stay here. The Kyoto of postcards: the teahouses of Hanamikoji, Yasaka Shrine, Kennin-ji and the stone lanes of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka climbing to Kiyomizu-dera. Staying here lets you walk the lanes at dawn and after dark, when the day-trip crowds have gone. Many of Kyoto's ryokan and machiya townhouse stays are here.
The catch. It costs the most in Kyoto, the lanes are packed from mid-morning, and there is no subway at its heart: you rely on the Keihan line, buses and walking, and the lanes towards Kiyomizu are uphill.
- Good for
- Couples, culture seekers, ryokan stays, photographers
- Not ideal for
- Tight budgets and travellers who want fast trains every day
By the numbers: 38 hotels, typically about $185 a night (most $130 to $370), average score 9.0. In 15 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the staff (9) and location (8); the most common complaints are about dated rooms (2). Includes 9 ryokan.

4. Okazaki and Northern Higashiyama: best for a calm base near the eastern temples
Why stay here. Heian Shrine's huge torii gate, the Kyoto City Museum of Art and the National Museum of Modern Art, Nanzen-ji and the start of the Philosopher's Path to Ginkaku-ji. The Tozai subway stops at Higashiyama and Keage, and Gion is a 15-minute walk south.
The catch. Evenings are very quiet with few restaurants, and Kyoto Station is about 25 minutes away.
- Good for
- Families, repeat visitors, walkers, museum lovers
- Not ideal for
- Nightlife or a short first trip
By the numbers: 22 hotels, typically about $124 a night (most $87 to $433), average score 8.8. Includes 7 ryokan.

5. Karasuma Oike: best for value in the centre, on two subway lines
Why stay here. The only point where Kyoto's two subway lines, the Karasuma and Tozai lines, cross. It is a business district with good-value hotels, coffee shops and the Kyoto International Manga Museum, and Nishiki Market is a 10-minute walk.
The catch. The streets are plain office blocks, so it lacks the charm of Gion or Higashiyama.
- Good for
- Value seekers who want to be central, subway users, business trips
- Not ideal for
- A traditional atmosphere outside the hotel
By the numbers: 19 hotels, typically about $160 a night (most $108 to $359), average score 8.6. In 11 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the staff (8) and location (5); the most common complaints are about small rooms (4). Includes 1 ryokan.

6. Nijo Castle: best for a quiet base with trains to Arashiyama
Why stay here. A residential area around Nijo Castle, the shoguns' palace with its 'nightingale' floors. JR Nijo Station is on the San-in line to Arashiyama (about 10 minutes), and the Tozai subway runs east to downtown and Higashiyama.
The catch. There is little nightlife and Gion is about 20 minutes away by subway.
- Good for
- Families, day trips to Arashiyama, travellers who want quiet streets
- Not ideal for
- Evenings out
By the numbers: 10 hotels, typically about $154 a night (most $35 to $572), average score 9.0. Includes 1 female-only, 1 capsule and 1 ryokan.
Best hotels in Nijo
7. Arashiyama: best for a night or two by the river and the bamboo grove
Why stay here. The Sagano bamboo grove, Tenryu-ji, the Togetsukyo Bridge and the Oi River, with the monkey park on the hillside. Some ryokan here have hot-spring baths, and staying overnight lets you see the bamboo grove before the crowds. JR, Hankyu and Randen trains connect it to the city.
The catch. It is on the far west edge: Gion and Kyoto Station are 30 to 40 minutes away, and shops and restaurants close early in the evening.
- Good for
- Couples, ryokan and onsen stays, nature lovers, a final night of a trip
- Not ideal for
- A whole first trip
By the numbers: 13 hotels, typically about $144 a night (most $81 to $399), average score 8.8. Includes 6 ryokan.
Best hotels in Arashiyama
Staying a week? Split your stay
Most visitors base themselves in one area, downtown or near the station, and add one night in a ryokan in Gion or Arashiyama. Hotels can forward your suitcase for about ¥2,000 to ¥3,000, so you can move with a day bag.
Where not to stay in Kyoto
- Hotels far from a train or subway line that leave you relying on buses.
- Arashiyama as the only base for a short first trip: it is on the far edge of the city.
- Booking late for cherry blossom or autumn leaves: the best-located hotels sell out months ahead.
- Hotels in other cities sold as "Kyoto": check the address and the travel time.
Tips for booking a hotel in Kyoto
- Book early for peak seasons. Cherry blossom (late March to early April) and autumn leaves (mid-November to early December) are Kyoto's busiest times. Book 3 to 6 months ahead, with free cancellation.
- Try one night in a ryokan. A traditional inn with tatami rooms, futons and often a multi-course dinner. Check whether dinner and breakfast are included and whether the bath is private or shared.
- Check the room size. Kyoto rooms are small: a standard double is often 12 to 18 m². If you have big suitcases or children, look for 20 m² or more.
- Use Kyoto Station for day trips. Nara is 35 to 45 minutes by Kintetsu or JR, Osaka 15 minutes by Shinkansen or 30 by JR, and Kansai Airport about 75 minutes on the Haruka.
- Drop your bags before check-in. Almost every hotel keeps luggage before check-in and after check-out, so you can sightsee on arrival and departure days.
