Can foreigners stay at any hotel in Haikou?
No. Hotels in mainland China need police approval to register foreign guests, and some smaller hotels do not have it. Every hotel on this list states on its booking page that it accepts guests from all countries. Book online rather than walking in: you can be turned away at a hotel without the approval, and staff cannot make an exception.
What happens when a foreigner checks in at a hotel in Haikou?
The front desk scans your passport and registers you with the police for you; it usually takes a few minutes. Staff may speak little English, but most use a translation device. Many hotels ask for no deposit; when they do, it is usually ¥100 to ¥300 by Alipay, WeChat Pay or foreign card, refunded at checkout.
Should I book my Haikou hotel in advance?
Yes. Booking ahead guarantees a hotel that can register you and keeps your room at busy times; there is nothing to gain by waiting until you arrive. Paying online in advance also avoids card machines that front-desk staff rarely use for foreign cards.
