Grande Colonial La Jolla is a well-kept 1912 classic in the village heart — comfortably sized rooms, free snacks, instant hot showers, an excellent restaurant, free bicycles and golf-cart rides within a mile, and a five-minute beach walk; valet parking is free and the spend runs about half the famous neighbor's. Age shows: carpets needed cleaning, robes were worn, rooms humid. One luggage-laden guest suffered: rooms readied slowly past check-in, a long stair-and-corridor trek (no ramps) broke a suitcase wheel, and a sea-view room showed only a corner of ocean. Valet once went missing for a quarter-hour.
