Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto is a marvellous new luxury hotel opposite Nijō Castle — big-for-Japan rooms with a wonderful shower, a delightful private and public onsen (water runs lukewarm; loaner swimwear provided), excellent Duji and Japanese breakfasts, easy valet parking, and kind helpful staff. Service seams show occasionally — one Italian-restaurant waiter lacked polish and a family got noise complaints for ordinary kid behaviour — and it's pricy; book garden or castle views over street-facing rooms.
