In a castle-like ex-prison near the V&A Waterfront — a five-minute downhill walk, supermarket reachable and Signal Hill behind — Protea Hotel Cape Town Waterfront Breakwater Lodge is an excellent very safe stay: everything excellent for some, fantastic Table Mountain views, lovely very helpful staff, one agent fixed a room-versus-photos mismatch and untangled park bookings, a green courtyard, free parking and a low-cost good breakfast. Cautions though: a fixed shower head, thin insecure-feeling doors and not-big family rooms.
