Twenty-eight kilometers into the Nikko countryside, three and a half hours by train, though the hotel collects from the station. Iwaiyado Jyuan is a renovated older ryokan where welcome drinks span coffee to local sake and sparkling wine, dinners pile on voluminous local-ingredient dishes with lighter portions on request, and the open-air onsen caps the relaxation. Repeat guests call it Tochigi's number one.
