A century-old Hakone icon, Fujiya Hotel pairs wonderful onsen and a photogenic indoor pool, too shallow for laps, with heritage ambience, an in-house museum, walking trails and a shuttle that spares the uphill luggage drag. Staff are kind, including a Chinese-speaking receptionist, and the teddy bear souvenir gets bought. Honest nicks: facilities and service feel dated, beds are pushed twins not kings, breakfast refined but bland-ish, the gym is airless, the spa pricey, tattoos are strictly banned, and one departing server was cold.
