Where to stay in Bangkok: a first-timer’s guide to 6 areas

Where to stay in Bangkok: Sukhumvit for a first trip (hotels typically about $104 a night), the Riverside for luxury and river views (about $168), and the Old City or Pratunam to spend less (about $30 to $36).

Bangkok is two cities for a visitor: the temples and the river on one side, the skytrain, malls and nightlife of Sukhumvit and Silom on the other, 30 to 60 minutes apart by road. Where you sleep decides which side you see easily, and how much of your trip you spend in traffic. We compared 195 hotels in 6 areas: what each is like, its catch, who it suits, what its hotels typically cost and the best-rated ones, so you can choose by your own priorities.

4 rules before you choose an area

  1. Stay near the skytrain. Bangkok's traffic is famous. A hotel within about 5 minutes of a BTS or MRT station, or a river pier, saves an hour a day. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's main station or sight.
  2. Choose by what you will do most. Sukhumvit and Silom for food, nightlife and malls; the Old City and the Riverside for the temples. The two sides are 30 to 60 minutes apart by road.
  3. Use the river. The Chao Phraya Express boats link the Riverside to the Grand Palace and Wat Arun without traffic.
  4. Book by the map, not the name. "Sukhumvit" covers more than 10 km. Check how far the hotel is from a BTS station before you book.

1. Sukhumvit: best for a first trip, food and nightlife

Why stay here. Bangkok's long main avenue under the BTS skytrain, from Nana through Asok and Phrom Phong to Thong Lo: malls such as Terminal 21 and EmQuartier, street food, rooftop bars and Thong Lo's restaurants. The BTS and the MRT meet at Asok, and the hotel choice is the widest in the city.

The catch. Traffic is heavy, the Grand Palace is 45 minutes or more away, and the streets around Nana and Soi Cowboy are red-light bar areas.

2. Silom and Sathorn: best for rooftop bars, Lumphini Park and business trips

Why stay here. Bangkok's business district: office towers, Lumphini Park, rooftop bars, street food on Silom's side streets and the Patpong night market. The BTS Silom line and the MRT meet at Sala Daeng and Silom, and the river is a short ride west.

The catch. It is busy and corporate by day, and Patpong is a red-light area at night.

3. Riverside (Chao Phraya): best for luxury hotels and river views

Why stay here. Bangkok's grand hotels line the Chao Phraya River along Charoen Krung, with river views, hotel boats and the Chao Phraya Express boats to the Grand Palace and Wat Arun. Saphan Taksin BTS station is at the pier, and the ICONSIAM mall is across the water.

The catch. It is pricey, you rely on boats and hotel shuttles, and there is less street life than in Sukhumvit.

4. Old City and Khao San: best for the temples and budget stays

Why stay here. Rattanakosin, the royal island: the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and its reclining Buddha, Wat Arun across the river, and Khao San Road's backpacker bars and street food. Hotels range from hostels to riverside boutiques, often at the city's lowest prices.

The catch. The skytrain does not reach it (the MRT stops only at Sanam Chai, by Wat Pho), Khao San is loud late, and touts around the palace run the "it's closed today" scam: walk to the official gate.

The catch. It is all malls and big roads, prices are high, and evenings are about shopping more than street life.

The catch. The streets are hectic and traffic-jammed, and the skytrain is a walk away.
