Where to stay in Shenzhen: a first-timer’s guide to 8 areas
Where to stay in Shenzhen: Nanshan for modern Shenzhen (hotels typically about $56 a night), Futian for a central base and Hong Kong trips (about $53), and Luohu or Huaqiangbei to spend less (about $30 to $38).
Shenzhen runs 50 km along the coast, and its districts feel like different cities: the modern towers of Nanshan, the business centre of Futian, the markets and border crossing of Luohu, and beaches to the east. Which side suits you depends on why you are here and whether you are crossing to Hong Kong. We compared 214 hotels in 8 areas: what each is like, its catch, who it suits, what its hotels typically cost and the best-rated ones, so you can choose by your own priorities.

4 rules before you choose an area
- Pick your side of the city. Shenzhen runs 50 km along the coast. Nanshan and Shekou in the west and Futian and Luohu in the centre are 30 to 45 minutes apart by metro, so choose the side your plans are on.
- Stay near a metro station. The metro is fast, cheap and in English, and it reaches every area here. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's centre.
- Plan your Hong Kong crossing. For Hong Kong, stay in Futian (high-speed train to West Kowloon, or Futian checkpoint) or Luohu (Luohu checkpoint). From Shekou, ferries go to Hong Kong airport and Macau.
- Book a hotel that accepts foreigners. Book online rather than walking in: a hotel listed on a booking site can almost always register foreign passports, and the policy line on its page says so.
1. Nanshan (Houhai and Shenzhen Bay): best for modern Shenzhen and a first trip
Why stay here. The heart of Nanshan, from Nanshan centre and the Nantou ancient town to Houhai: the Shenzhen Bay MixC mall, Talent Park and Shenzhen Bay Park on the waterfront, and the headquarters towers of China's tech giants. This is where you can try what makes Shenzhen different: most of the city's robotaxis run in Nanshan, and Talent Park is the best-known spot to receive a food delivery by drone. Metro lines 1, 2 and 11 cross the district.
The catch. It is spread out and business-like, so you walk between towers and malls; hotels near the bay cost more than in Luohu.
- Good for
- First-timers, tech fans, couples, shoppers
- Not ideal for
- Old-town atmosphere or the tightest budgets
By the numbers: 34 hotels, typically about $56 a night (most $28 to $95), average score 8.9.

2. Futian CBD: best for a central base and Hong Kong day trips
Why stay here. The city centre around the Civic Center, Lianhuashan Park and Futian Station, where high-speed trains reach Hong Kong West Kowloon in about 15 minutes. The Huaqiangbei electronics market is a short metro ride away, and Futian checkpoint is a quick way into Hong Kong by MTR.
The catch. Business hotels dominate, and the CBD streets are quiet in the evening outside the malls.
- Good for
- First-timers, Hong Kong day trips, business trips, families
- Not ideal for
- Nightlife on the doorstep
By the numbers: 31 hotels, typically about $53 a night (most $34 to $120), average score 8.6. In 8 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the staff (5) and views (4).

3. Huaqiangbei: best for electronics shopping and value in the centre
Why stay here. The world's biggest electronics market: whole buildings of phones, drones, gadgets and components, between Futian and Luohu. Several metro lines cross here, and hotels are often cheaper than in the CBD.
The catch. It is crowded and commercial, with little greenery, and many markets close in the early evening.
- Good for
- Gadget shoppers, value seekers, short stays
- Not ideal for
- A calm or scenic stay
By the numbers: 22 hotels, typically about $38 a night (most $27 to $70), average score 9.1. Includes 1 capsule.

- 39.6Atour Hotel Shenzhen Futian Huaqiangnorth Pedestrian Street4-star · about 7 min walk to Huaqiang Roadfrom $70 / night

4. Luohu and Dongmen: best for low prices and the Luohu border crossing
Why stay here. Shenzhen's older centre: Dongmen, its oldest shopping street, with food stalls and markets, and Luohu checkpoint, the classic crossing to Hong Kong's MTR East Rail line. Hotels here are among the cheapest in central Shenzhen.
The catch. It is older, busier and rougher around the edges than Futian or Nanshan, and far from the bay.
- Good for
- Budget travellers, Hong Kong crossings, street food
- Not ideal for
- A polished, modern stay
By the numbers: 67 hotels, typically about $30 a night (most $24 to $51), average score 8.8.
Best hotels in Luohu
5. Shekou and Sea World: best for evenings out and ferries to Hong Kong and Macau
Why stay here. The southern tip of Nanshan around Sea World, a plaza of restaurants and bars built around the Minghua, an old cruise ship, with an international crowd. Shekou ferry terminal has boats to Hong Kong airport and Macau.
The catch. It is at the far west of the city, so the centre and Luohu are 30 to 45 minutes away by metro.
- Good for
- Nightlife, couples, expats, ferry travellers
- Not ideal for
- Trips centred on Futian or Hong Kong by train
By the numbers: 14 hotels, typically about $50 a night (most $32 to $56), average score 8.9.
Best hotels in Shekou
6. Dameisha and Xiaomeisha: best for an easy beach stay
Why stay here. Shenzhen is more than towers and robots: it has one of the most beautiful coastlines in southern China. Dameisha and Xiaomeisha in Yantian are its best-known beaches, a long sandy bay below green hills with resort hotels along the front, about an hour from Futian.
The catch. These are the city's most popular beaches, busy at weekends and on holidays, and there is little to do at night.
- Good for
- Families, a beach day or weekend, resort stays
- Not ideal for
- Quiet beaches or nightlife
By the numbers: 6 hotels, typically about $97 a night (most $65 to $255), average score 8.7.
Best hotels in Dameisha
7. Dapeng peninsula (Xichong and Nan'ao): best for quiet beaches away from the city
Why stay here. The green peninsula at Shenzhen's eastern end, with small fishing towns, seafood restaurants, sea-view guesthouses and massage places. Xichong is our founder's favourite beach in Shenzhen, and the most beautiful: wide, quiet and with an island feel, and the visitors are mostly local, so it feels nothing like the crowded beaches of Thailand or Bali. Entry is ¥50, and a beach umbrella rents for about ¥100 for 4 hours (umbrella only, no chairs). A small nightlife scene near Xichong comes alive after dark. In Nan'ao, the 7-Eleven Haibeiwan (海贝湾店) on Haibin South Road, open 24 hours, has a window bar looking straight out over the sea; Chinese visitors call it Shenzhen's most beautiful 7-Eleven. Around it are Haibeiwan beach with a small swimming area, seafood restaurants, guesthouses and massage places: not much to do, but a beautiful place to relax for half a day or a day.
The catch. It is 1.5 to 2 hours from the centre and only reachable by car or DiDi. Taxis are scarce, especially at night, so arrange your ride back in advance.
- Good for
- Couples, beach lovers, a relaxing night or two by the sea
- Not ideal for
- A first trip without a car, or travellers on a tight schedule
By the numbers: 25 hotels, typically about $68 a night (most $47 to $117), average score 9.4.

Best hotels in Dapeng
8. Bao'an Centre and Qianhai: best for flights from Shenzhen airport
Why stay here. Bao'an's centre and the new Qianhai district on the bay, about 15 to 20 minutes from Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport, on metro lines 1, 5 and 11.
The catch. It is far from Futian and Luohu, and there is little to see for a first-time visitor.
- Good for
- Early or late flights, business in Qianhai
- Not ideal for
- Sightseeing or Hong Kong day trips
By the numbers: 15 hotels, typically about $30 a night (most $26 to $42), average score 9.0.

Staying a week? Split your stay
Give Shenzhen at least five days rather than a day trip from Hong Kong: two or three nights in Nanshan or Futian for the city, then one or two by the sea at Dameisha or on the Dapeng peninsula. For a Hong Kong day out, Futian is 15 minutes away by train; for Macau or a ferry from Hong Kong airport, Shekou is closest.
Where not to stay in Shenzhen
- Hotels far from a metro station: Shenzhen is long and spread out.
- Walking in to small budget hotels: some cannot register foreign guests.
- Inland outer districts such as Longgang for a sightseeing trip: they are an hour or more from the centre.
- A day trip to Xichong without a ride back: book or arrange it before you go.
- Booking late for Golden Week (early October) and Chinese New Year.
Tips for booking a hotel in Shenzhen
- Flying in or out early. Bao'an Centre and Qianhai are 15 to 20 minutes from the airport; stay there the night before an early flight.
- Try the future. Drone food delivery has pick-up stations across several districts, including Longhua; Talent Park in Nanshan is the best-known spot to try it. Robotaxis run mostly in Nanshan, and some operators also reach parts of Futian; each operator covers its own area, so check the live map in its mini-program inside Alipay or WeChat before you plan a ride.
- Shop in Hong Kong for luxury brands. Hong Kong has no sales tax, so luxury and international brands often cost less there than in mainland China; Futian is the easiest base for a day trip.
- Set up payments before you fly. Link a foreign card to Alipay or WeChat Pay: the metro, taxis and food stalls are paid by QR code.
- Compare a few hotels side by side. Every area above lets you compare its top picks by score, typical price and walk before you book.

Where should I stay in Shenzhen for a Hong Kong day trip?

What is the cheapest area to stay in Shenzhen?
Luohu (about $30 a night), Bao'an (about $30 a night) and Huaqiangbei (about $38 a night) have the lowest typical prices of the areas we compared, counting only areas with 8 or more hotels.
What is the cheapest area to stay in central Shenzhen?
Luohu, around Dongmen and the border crossing, where hotels typically cost about $30 a night, and Huaqiangbei next to the electronics market.
Does Shenzhen have good beaches?
Yes. Dameisha and Xiaomeisha in Yantian are the best-known, about an hour from the centre and busy at weekends. Xichong, on the Dapeng peninsula, is the most beautiful and much quieter, with mostly local visitors. Entry is ¥50 and a beach umbrella costs about ¥100 for 4 hours; it is 1.5 to 2 hours away by car or DiDi, so plan your ride back.
How many days in Shenzhen is enough?
At least five, not the day trip from Hong Kong many guides suggest. Day 1: Shenzhen Bay and Talent Park in Nanshan. Day 2: Huaqiangbei's electronics markets and Lianhuashan Park in Futian. Day 3: OCT Loft and the OCT parks. Day 4: the beaches at Dameisha or Xichong. Day 5: Shekou and Nantou Ancient Town. Hong Kong is 15 minutes from Futian by train if you want a day there.
Is Shenzhen worth visiting as a tourist?
Yes. Ziad, Staylist's founder, lives in Shenzhen and recommends at least five days: a futuristic skyline on the bay, the world's biggest electronics markets, beaches and hiking on the Dapeng peninsula, and food from every region of China, at lower hotel prices than Hong Kong.
When should I avoid visiting Shenzhen?
Golden Week (1 to 7 October) and Chinese New Year, when hotels fill and the border crossings are crowded, and typhoon days in summer and early autumn, when ferries and beaches close. Spring and late autumn are the most comfortable.
Can foreigners stay in any hotel in Shenzhen?
Not every one: some small budget hotels cannot register foreign passports. Hotels listed on booking sites almost always can, and the policy line on the hotel's page says whether it accepts guests from all countries.
Where should families stay in Shenzhen?
Guests most often recommend hotels in Futian for families. Check the room size and bed type on each hotel's page before you book.
Should I stay in more than one area of Shenzhen?

Our verdict
For a first trip, stay in Nanshan for the bay, MixC, Talent Park and the tech side of Shenzhen, or in Futian CBD for a central base with fast trains to Hong Kong. Choose Luohu or Huaqiangbei to spend less, Shekou for evenings out, Bao'an for early flights, and the Dapeng peninsula for a night or two on Shenzhen's quiet beaches.
