4 rules before you choose an area
- Kowloon or the island. Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok (Kowloon) are cheaper and face the skyline; Central, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay (Hong Kong Island) are the skyline. The Star Ferry and the MTR link them in minutes.
- Be near an MTR station. The MTR is fast and air-conditioned. A hotel within about 5 minutes of a station makes the heat and the hills easy. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's main station.
- Expect small rooms. Hong Kong rooms are among the smallest anywhere, often under 15 m² below luxury level. Check the room size before you book.
- Get an Octopus card. One card for the MTR, buses, trams, ferries and convenience stores.
1. Tsim Sha Tsui: best for a first trip and harbour views
Why stay here. The tip of Kowloon facing the Hong Kong Island skyline: the waterfront promenade and the nightly Symphony of Lights, the Avenue of Stars, the museums, Canton Road's shopping and the Star Ferry to Central. Two MTR lines serve it.
The catch. It is crowded, Nathan Road is noisy, and rooms are small; some budget guesthouses are very basic.
- Good for
- First-timers, families, shoppers, skyline views
- Not ideal for
- Quiet streets

Staying a week? Split your stay
Most visitors need one base. For 5 nights or more, try 3 in Tsim Sha Tsui and 2 in Central or Sheung Wan to see both sides of the harbour.
Where not to stay in Hong Kong
- The most basic guesthouses in Tsim Sha Tsui's older blocks if you need space or a window.
- Hotels far from the MTR, especially in summer heat.
- Booking during big trade fairs in Wan Chai without checking prices.
- Hotels near the airport for a city trip: the Airport Express reaches Central in about 25 minutes.
Tips for booking a hotel in Hong Kong
- Take the Airport Express. Trains run to Kowloon Station and Hong Kong Station in about 20 to 25 minutes.
- Ask for a harbour view. Harbour-view rooms cost more but are the reason many people stay in Tsim Sha Tsui or on the island waterfront.
- Book early for peak dates. Chinese New Year, Art Basel (March) and big trade fairs push prices up. Book with free cancellation.
- Drop your bags before check-in. Most hotels keep luggage before check-in and after check-out, so you can sightsee on arrival and departure days.
- Compare a few hotels side by side. Every area above lets you compare its top picks by score, typical price and walk before you book.
