4 rules before you choose an area
- Stay on the Yuzhong peninsula. Jiefangbei, Hongyadong and Chaotianmen hold the sights, the food and the river views. Chongqing is huge, so a hotel out of town adds a lot of travel.
- Expect stairs and slopes. Chongqing is built on steep hills: streets connect by stairs, escalators and footbridges. Check the walk on the map, and pack light.
- Use the metro and the cableway. The monorail and metro handle the hills well, and the Yangtze River Cableway crosses to the south bank. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's centre.
- Check the hotel accepts foreign guests. Mid-range and upscale hotels almost always do; some budget hotels cannot register foreign passports. Trip.com shows this on the hotel page.

Staying a week? Split your stay
Two nights in Jiefangbei or Chaotianmen is enough for most visitors; combine it with Chengdu, 1 to 1.5 hours away by high-speed train, or a Yangtze cruise.
Where not to stay in Chongqing
- Hotels far from a metro or monorail station: the hills make walking slow.
- Budget hotels that do not accept foreign guests: check before you pay.
- Station hotels for a whole stay.
- Booking late for Golden Week (early October) and Chinese New Year.
Tips for booking a hotel in Chongqing
- See Hongyadong late. The lights come on at dusk and the crowds thin after about 10 pm.
- Swim above the rivers. Several towers on the peninsula put pools on their high floors. At Chongqing Indition High Altitude Hotel, on the 38th floor above Chaotianmen metro, a heated infinity pool looks over the rivers and Raffles City. See the hotel's reviews and prices.
- Watch the train go through a building. At Liziba station on monorail line 2, the train runs straight through a residential tower; there is a viewing platform below.
- Set up payments before you fly. Link a foreign card to Alipay or WeChat Pay: taxis, metro tickets and hotpot are paid by QR code.
- Sort out mobile data. Google, WhatsApp and Instagram are blocked on Chinese networks; a roaming plan or a travel eSIM from abroad keeps them working.
- Compare a few hotels side by side. Every area above lets you compare its top picks by score, typical price and walk before you book.
