Where to stay in Chengdu: Chunxi Road for a first trip (hotels typically about $57 a night), Kuanzhai Alley for old lanes and teahouses (about $36), and Chengdu East Station for trains and value (about $22).
Chengdu is a city for eating, teahouses and an early start to see the pandas, and most of that happens inside the 2nd Ring Road. We compared 79 hotels in 5 areas: what each is like, its catch, who it suits, what its hotels typically cost and the best-rated ones, so you can choose by your own priorities.

4 rules before you choose an area
- Stay inside the 2nd Ring Road. Chunxi Road, Tianfu Square and Kuanzhai Alley put the food, the teahouses and the metro close.

- Check the hotel accepts foreign guests. Mid-range and upscale hotels almost always do; some budget hotels cannot register foreign passports. Trip.com shows this on the hotel page.

- Set up payments before you fly. Link a foreign card to Alipay or WeChat Pay: taxis, metro tickets and hotpot are paid by QR code.
- Sort out mobile data. Google, WhatsApp and Instagram are blocked on Chinese networks; a roaming plan or a travel eSIM from abroad keeps them working.
- Ask for mild hotpot. Sichuan hotpot is very spicy; most restaurants offer a split pot with a mild broth.
