Where to stay in Paris: a first-timer’s guide to 11 areas
Where to stay in Paris: Le Marais for a first trip (hotels typically about $326 a night), Saint-Germain for classic Paris cafés (about $377), and Montmartre or Gare du Nord to spend less (about $156 to $214).
Paris itself is small, just the 20 arrondissements inside the ring road, with a metro station every few hundred metres. What really changes between areas is the atmosphere and the price, from the Marais and the Left Bank to the village streets of Montmartre. We compared 544 hotels in 11 areas: what each is like, its catch, who it suits, what its hotels typically cost and the best-rated ones, so you can choose by your own priorities.

4 rules before you choose an area
- Stay inside the 20 arrondissements. Paris proper is small: the 20 arrondissements inside the Périphérique ring road. The 1st to 7th are the most central. Hotels beyond the ring road are cheaper but cost you time every day.
- Be near a metro station. Paris has a metro station every few hundred metres. A hotel within about 5 minutes of one, ideally on line 1, 4 or 14, or the RER for the airports, saves time every day. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's main station or sight.
- Check the arrondissement, not the name. "Paris" or "Eiffel" in a hotel's name does not make it central: some are in La Défense, Saint-Denis or near Disneyland. The postcode (75001 to 75020) tells you the arrondissement.
- Check the room and the lift. Rooms in old Paris buildings are small, often 10 to 15 m², and lifts can be tiny or missing. If you have big suitcases, check the room size and whether there is a lift.
1. Le Marais: best for a first trip, walking and evenings out
Why stay here. Medieval lanes and 17th-century mansions in the 3rd and 4th arrondissements: Place des Vosges, the Picasso Museum, the falafel shops of Rue des Rosiers, independent boutiques and lively bars. Notre-Dame, Île Saint-Louis and the Centre Pompidou are a short walk, and metro line 1 runs straight to the Louvre and the Champs-Élysées.
The catch. Rooms are small and expensive, and it is crowded on weekends, when most shops stay open on Sunday.
- Good for
- First-timers, couples, food lovers, nightlife
- Not ideal for
- Big rooms on a tight budget
By the numbers: 24 hotels, typically about $326 a night (most $304 to $435), average score 7.5.

The catch. The lanes around Rue de la Huchette are full of tourist-trap restaurants, and rooms are small.
- Good for
- First-timers, students, history lovers, easy CDG transfers
- Not ideal for
- Luxury and large rooms
By the numbers: 49 hotels, typically about $306 a night (most $235 to $400), average score 7.5. In 10 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the location (7) and staff (7); the most common complaints are about small rooms (5) and slow lifts (3).

- Good for
- Shoppers, first-timers, families, travellers who want lots of choice

Why stay here. The hilltop village of the 18th arrondissement: Sacré-Cœur, Place du Tertre's painters, vineyards, cafés and the Moulin Rouge at the bottom of the hill. Hotels are usually cheaper than in the centre. Metro lines 2 and 12 serve it.
The catch. It is hilly, with long stairways, and the boulevards around Pigalle and Barbès are loud and rough at night. Sacré-Cœur's steps are known for street scams, and the Left Bank sights are 30 minutes away.

The catch. The bar streets are noisy late, and there are fewer landmarks on the doorstep.

Why stay here. Gare du Nord has the Eurostar to London and the RER B to Charles de Gaulle Airport (about 35 minutes), and Gare de l'Est has trains to eastern France and Germany. The Canal Saint-Martin's cafés are a short walk east, and hotels are among the cheapest in central Paris.

Staying a week? Split your stay
Paris is compact, so one base usually works. For a week, try 4 nights in the Marais or the Latin Quarter, then 3 in Montmartre or Saint-Germain for a different side of the city.
Where not to stay in Paris
- Hotels outside the Périphérique sold as "Paris": cheaper, but you lose the saving in metro time.
- La Défense for a leisure trip: it is a business district west of the city.
- The streets right around Gare du Nord and Pigalle if you want quiet, pretty evenings.
- Booking a tiny room without checking the size and lift, especially with big suitcases.
Tips for booking a hotel in Paris
- Book early for peak dates. Late spring, summer, Christmas and Fashion Week weeks sell out first. Book 2 to 4 months ahead, with free cancellation.
- Check the city tax. Paris charges a tourist tax per person per night, usually paid at the hotel and not always included in the online price.
- Check the room size. A standard double is often 10 to 15 m² in older buildings. Look for 20 m² or more with big suitcases or children.
- Breakfast is often extra. Hotel breakfast is rarely included and often costs more than a café nearby. A croissant and coffee at a local bakery is part of the fun.
- Drop your bags before check-in. Most hotels keep luggage before check-in and after check-out, so you can sightsee on arrival and departure days.
- Compare a few hotels side by side. Every area above lets you compare its top picks by score, typical price and walk before you book.

Questions about where to stay in Paris
Where is the best place to stay in Paris for first-timers?
The Marais, the Latin Quarter or Saint-Germain-des-Prés: all three are central, walkable and close to Notre-Dame and the Louvre. Staylist World lists 24 hotels in the Marais, typically about $326 a night.
Is it better to stay on the Left Bank or the Right Bank?
The Left Bank (Latin Quarter, about $306 a night; Saint-Germain, about $377) for cafés, bookshops and a classic feel. The Right Bank (the Marais, the Louvre, Opéra) for nightlife, shopping and more metro lines. Both are a short walk across the Seine from each other.
What is the cheapest area to stay in Paris?
Gare du Nord (about $156 a night), Bastille (about $210 a night) and Montmartre (about $214 a night) have the lowest typical prices of the areas we compared, counting only areas with 8 or more hotels.
Where should I stay in Paris for an Eiffel Tower view?
In the 7th arrondissement, near the Champ de Mars, or across the river in the 16th near Trocadéro. Book a room that the hotel describes as having a tower view, not just the area.
Where should I stay in Paris for Charles de Gaulle Airport?
Near Gare du Nord or in the Latin Quarter, on the RER B line that runs direct to the airport in about 35 minutes from Gare du Nord.
Is Montmartre a good area to stay in Paris?
Yes, for a village feel, views and lower prices. Be ready for hills and stairs, and expect a 30-minute metro ride to the Left Bank. Stay up the hill, towards Abbesses, rather than on the loud boulevards around Pigalle.
Where should families stay in Paris?
Guests most often recommend hotels in Opéra for families. Check the room size and bed type on each hotel's page before you book.
Should I stay in more than one area of Paris?
Paris is compact, so one base usually works. For a week, try 4 nights in the Marais or the Latin Quarter, then 3 in Montmartre or Saint-Germain for a different side of the city.
Where are the female-only hotels in Paris?
Staylist World lists female-only hotels, capsules and floors in Montmartre (2), the Champs-Élysées (1), Bastille (1) and Gare du Nord (1). See all of them on the female-only hotels page.
Our verdict
For a first trip, book the Marais, the Latin Quarter or Saint-Germain: you will walk to Notre-Dame, the Louvre and the best cafés. Choose Opéra for shopping and the most choice, the 7th for Eiffel Tower views and calm, the Champs-Élysées for luxury, Bastille for nightlife, and Montmartre or Gare du Nord to spend less. Then pick a hotel within 5 minutes of a metro station.
