4 rules before you choose an area
- Stay in Zone 1. Central London is Zone 1 of the Tube map. Hotels further out are cheaper but add 30 to 60 minutes of travel every day.
- Be near a Tube station. A hotel within about 5 minutes of a Tube station saves time on every trip. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's main station or sight.
- Match the hotel to your airport. Heathrow: the Piccadilly line, the Elizabeth line or the Heathrow Express from Paddington. Gatwick: Victoria or London Bridge. Stansted: Liverpool Street. The Eurostar leaves from St Pancras.
- Check the room and the lift. Many central hotels are in old townhouses with small rooms, narrow stairs and no lift. Check the room size and access before you book.
1. Covent Garden and Soho: best for a first trip, theatres and restaurants
Why stay here. The West End: the theatres of Shaftesbury Avenue and Drury Lane, Covent Garden's market and street performers, Soho's restaurants and bars, and Leicester Square and Chinatown. The catch. It is the most crowded part of London and among the most expensive, rooms are small, and the streets are noisy late.

Staying a week? Split your stay
London is big but the Tube makes one base work. For a week, try 4 nights in Covent Garden or the South Bank, then 3 in South Kensington or Shoreditch for a different side of the city.
Where not to stay in London
- Hotels outside Zone 1 or 2 sold as "central London": check the Tube time.
- The City at weekends if you want restaurants and pubs open around you.
- The cheapest Bayswater and Earl's Court rooms without checking the score and recent reviews.
- Hotels a long walk from a Tube station, especially with luggage.
Tips for booking a hotel in London
- Book early for peak dates. Summer, Christmas, Wimbledon and big concerts fill hotels first. Book 2 to 4 months ahead, with free cancellation.
- Use contactless or Oyster. Tap a contactless card or phone on the Tube and buses: daily fares are capped, so you never pay more than a day pass.
- Check the room size. Central London rooms are often 12 to 16 m². Look for 20 m² or more with big suitcases or children.
- Look at weekends in the City. Business hotels in the City and Canary Wharf often cost much less on Friday to Sunday nights.
- Drop your bags before check-in. Most hotels keep luggage before check-in and after check-out, so you can sightsee on arrival and departure days.
- Compare a few hotels side by side. Every area above lets you compare its top picks by score, typical price and walk before you book.
