Where to stay in Amsterdam: a first-timer’s guide to 7 areas
Where to stay in Amsterdam: the Canal Ring for a first trip (hotels typically about $298 a night), the Museum Quarter for the museums and calm (about $249), and the Old Centre or Noord to spend less (about $164 to $234).
Amsterdam's centre is small enough to walk, ringed by canals, and most of what you will want to see sits inside or just outside that ring. The real trade-offs are steep canal-house stairs, a city tax among the highest in Europe, and calmer, cheaper neighbourhoods a tram ride out. We compared 114 hotels in 7 areas: what each is like, its catch, who it suits, what its hotels typically cost and the best-rated ones, so you can choose by your own priorities.

4 rules before you choose an area
- Stay inside or close to the canal ring. The centre is compact and walkable. Hotels further out are cheaper but add a tram, metro or ferry ride to every outing.
- Check the stairs. Canal houses have steep, narrow staircases and often no lift. With luggage or limited mobility, check before you book.
- Expect the city tax. Amsterdam's tourist tax is a percentage of the room price, among the highest in Europe, and often not included in the headline price.
- Watch the bike lanes. Bikes have the right of way on red-paved lanes. Keep off them when you walk.
1. Canal Ring and Jordaan: best for a first trip and the canals
Why stay here. The 17th-century canal belt and the Jordaan's lanes: the Anne Frank House, the Nine Streets' boutiques, brown cafés and canal-side restaurants. Dam Square, the museums and most sights are a walk or a short tram ride away.
The catch. It is the priciest part of the city, rooms are small, and canal houses have steep, narrow stairs and often no lift.
- Good for
- First-timers, couples, walkers
- Not ideal for
- Tight budgets and travellers who need a lift
By the numbers: 30 hotels, typically about $298 a night (most $212 to $507), average score 7.4. In 13 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the location (9) and staff (8); the most common complaints are about small rooms (4). Includes 1 female-only.

Where not to stay in Amsterdam
- Hotels by the Red Light District's busiest streets if you want quiet nights.

- Booking late for King's Day (27 April) and big events, when prices jump.
Tips for booking a hotel in Amsterdam
- Book early for peak dates. Spring tulip season, King's Day, summer and Amsterdam Dance Event in October fill hotels first. Book with free cancellation.
- Take the train from Schiphol. Trains run from the airport to Centraal Station in about 15 minutes and to Zuid in about 10.
- Check the room size. Central rooms are small. With big suitcases or children, look for 20 m² or more.
- Drop your bags before check-in. Most hotels keep luggage before check-in and after check-out, so you can sightsee on arrival and departure days.
