4 rules before you choose an area
- Stay inside or near the Ring. The old city and the districts around it (the 1st to 9th) put the sights within walking distance or a short U-Bahn ride.
- Be near a U-Bahn station. Vienna's U-Bahn and trams are fast and easy. A hotel within about 5 minutes of a station saves time every day. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's centre.
- Book early for winter events. The Christmas markets (mid-November to December) and the January ball season fill the best-located hotels.
- Expect the city tax. Vienna charges a tax on overnight stays, usually added at the hotel.
1. Innere Stadt (1st district): best for a first trip and the grand sights
Why stay here. The old city inside the Ringstrasse: St Stephen's Cathedral, the Hofburg palace, the State Opera, the Graben and Kärntner Strasse, and the classic coffee houses. Everything is walkable, and the U1 and U3 lines meet at Stephansplatz.
The catch. It is the most expensive district, the main streets are crowded by day, and parts go quiet at night.
- Good for
- First-timers, couples, short stays, opera and concert goers
- Not ideal for
- Tight budgets
By the numbers: 38 hotels, typically about $232 a night (most $186 to $393), average score 8.3. In 19 AI overviews of guest reviews, the most common praise is for the location (16) and staff (13); the most common complaints are about cleanliness (3) and dated rooms (2).

Staying a week? Split your stay
Most visitors need one base. For 4 nights or more, try 2 in the Innere Stadt and 2 in Neubau or Wieden for a more local side of the city.
Where not to stay in Vienna
- Hotels far outside the Gürtel ring road sold as "central": check the U-Bahn time.
- The streets right around Praterstern if you want pretty evenings.
- Booking late for the Christmas markets or ball season.
- Hotels near the airport for a city trip: the CAT train reaches the centre in 16 minutes.
Tips for booking a hotel in Vienna
- Check the airport route. The City Airport Train runs non-stop to Wien Mitte in 16 minutes; the S7 and Railjet trains are cheaper.
- Go to a concert. Many hotels near the Opera and the Musikverein can help with tickets; book well ahead for the Opera.
- Breakfast is often worth it. Viennese hotel breakfasts are generous; compare the price with a coffee house nearby.
- Drop your bags before check-in. Most hotels keep luggage before check-in and after check-out, so you can sightsee on arrival and departure days.
- Compare a few hotels side by side. Every area above lets you compare its top picks by score, typical price and walk before you book.
