Where to stay in Venice: a first-timer’s guide to 7 areas

Where to stay in Venice: San Marco for a first trip (hotels typically about $482 a night), Cannaregio or Dorsoduro for quieter canals (about $596 to $847), and Mestre to spend less (about $206).

Venice has no cars and many bridges with steps, so the walk from the station or the water bus to your door matters. Its magic is in the evenings and early mornings after the day-trippers leave, which is why a night on the islands, not in Mestre, is worth it. We compared 92 hotels in 7 areas: what each is like, its catch, who it suits, what its hotels typically cost and the best-rated ones, so you can choose by your own priorities.

4 rules before you choose an area

  1. Stay in Venice itself for at least one night. The magic is in the evenings and early mornings, after the day-trippers leave. Mestre is cheaper but you miss it.
  2. Plan the walk with luggage. There are no cars, and many bridges have steps. Check how far your hotel is from the station or a vaporetto stop. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's centre.
  3. Stay near a vaporetto stop. The water buses are the only transport. A hotel close to a stop on the Grand Canal saves a lot of walking.
  4. Check the access fee rules. On peak days Venice charges day-trippers an access fee; hotel guests are exempt but pay a city tax at the hotel. Check the city's official site before you go.

1. San Marco: best for a first trip and the grand hotels

Why stay here. St Mark's Square, the Basilica, the Doge's Palace and the Grand Canal's palace hotels. Everything famous is a short walk, and vaporetto stops line the waterfront.

The catch. It is the most crowded and expensive part of Venice by day, and it is the first area to flood during acqua alta.

Budget trips and quiet lanes
