4 rules before you choose an area
- Old city or Beyoğlu. For a first trip, choose between Sultanahmet (the monuments, quiet nights) and Galata or Beyoğlu (cafés and nightlife, 20 minutes away by tram or on foot over the Galata Bridge).
- Be near the T1 tram or a ferry pier. The T1 tram links Sultanahmet, Sirkeci, Karaköy and Kabataş. A hotel within about 5 minutes of it, or of a ferry pier, saves time every day. Each hotel below shows its estimated walk to the area's main stop or sight.
- Check the hills. Galata, Cihangir and parts of Beyoğlu are very steep. With luggage, check the walk on the map.
- Get an Istanbulkart. One rechargeable card covers trams, metros, ferries, buses and the funicular.
1. Sultanahmet: best for a first trip and the great monuments
Why stay here. The old city: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Basilica Cistern are all a few minutes' walk apart, and the Grand Bazaar is 15 minutes away. The T1 tram runs through it, and many small family-run hotels have rooftop terraces with Bosphorus views.
The catch. It is touristy, with carpet-shop touts and tourist-menu restaurants, and it goes quiet at night.

- First-timers, history lovers, families, short stays
- Not ideal for
- Nightlife

Staying a week? Split your stay
For 5 nights or more, try 3 in Sultanahmet for the monuments, then 2 or 3 in Galata or Kadıköy for food and evenings out.
Where not to stay in Istanbul
- Hotels far from a tram, metro or ferry: Istanbul's traffic is slow.
- Booking only on a hotel's "Taksim" or "Sultanahmet" name: check the walk on the map.
- Following touts into carpet shops near the monuments.
- The streets just off İstiklal if you sleep early.
Tips for booking a hotel in Istanbul
- Book early for peak dates. Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the best months and the busiest. Book with free cancellation.
- Check the airport route. Istanbul Airport is about an hour from the centre by Havaist bus, or by the M11 metro from Gayrettepe; Sabiha Gökçen is on the Asian side.
- Ask about the rooftop. Many Sultanahmet hotels have breakfast terraces with views of the Bosphorus or the mosques.
- Expect the call to prayer. Hotels next to mosques hear the call to prayer five times a day, including before dawn.
- Drop your bags before check-in. Most hotels keep luggage before check-in and after check-out, so you can sightsee on arrival and departure days.
- Compare a few hotels side by side. Every area above lets you compare its top picks by score, typical price and walk before you book.
